Celtic Triumphs Over Utrecht 4-2, Secures Europa League Play-Off
Celtic advanced to the knockout stages of the Europa League with a commanding 4-2 victory over FC Utrecht on March 15, 2024. The match showcased a strong performance from Celtic, highlighted by goals from Benjamin Nygren, an own goal by Nick Viergever, a penalty converted by Arne Engels, and a header from Auston Trusty. Despite a spirited fightback from Utrecht, who narrowed the gap with goals from Dani de Wit and Adrian Blake, the Scottish champions held firm to secure their place in the next round.
Celtic’s interim manager, Martin O’Neill, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s display, acknowledging both the challenges faced and the quality shown. “Obviously I’m delighted with the result for a start,” O’Neill said. “And the performance I thought for most parts was really terrific.”
The match began with an early goal from Nygren, which set the tone for Celtic’s dominance. They extended their lead with an own goal from Viergever, putting Utrecht on the back foot. Although Utrecht managed to reduce the deficit twice, Celtic responded effectively each time, ensuring their progression in the tournament.
O’Neill reflected on the journey to this point, noting the team’s rocky start in the group phase, where they won only one of their first four matches. “You would have got long odds on us qualifying after about four games or something like this here,” he explained. The interim manager credited his players for their tireless efforts and adaptability throughout the competition.
The upcoming draw on March 17, 2024, will determine who Celtic faces next. They could meet Ferencvaros or Stuttgart in the play-off round, with potential further challenges against teams like Braga or Porto in the round of 16.
O’Neill also spoke about the managerial progress of former Celtic striker Robbie Keane, who now leads Ferencvaros. “Robbie’s just starting his managerial career. He’s doing really, really well,” O’Neill noted, highlighting Keane’s successful transition from player to coach.
In terms of squad enhancements, O’Neill confirmed that Celtic is exploring potential signings, including wingers Fares Ghedjemis from Italian Serie B club Frosinone, and Damir Redzic of DAC Dunajska Streda. When asked about the possibilities, he responded, “I’ve got to tell you, you wouldn’t be a million miles away with those names.”
Celtic’s victory not only secures their place in the next round but also boosts morale as they continue their campaign in Europe. The performance against Utrecht marks a turning point for the team, showcasing their potential as they aim for success in the Europa League.
