Utah’s Gov. Cox Affirms U.S. Welcomes All Ahead of 2034 Olympics
Utah Governor Spencer Cox reinforced the message that the United States remains a welcoming nation as his state prepares to host the 2034 Winter Olympics. Speaking at a press conference during the Milan Cortina Olympics, Cox addressed concerns regarding the U.S. political climate and its impact on international relations.
During a session with European media, Cox faced challenging questions about how the current political landscape contrasts with the optimistic vision of the upcoming Olympic Games in Utah. His remarks came as the global community scrutinizes U.S. domestic politics, especially with events like the recent opening ceremony, where U.S. Vice President JD Vance received a mixed reception from the audience.
Cox acknowledged the complexities of the political climate, stating, “We care deeply about the political situation that is happening in the United States right now.” He emphasized that there is considerable time before the Winter Games return to Salt Lake City, saying, “Eight years is a long ways away, for sure.” This statement sets the stage for a hopeful future, despite current challenges.
Cox highlighted the democratic processes in the U.S., drawing parallels with Germany’s political system. “We have elections just like your country,” he remarked, indicating that the situation may evolve over time. He expressed his commitment to promoting civility over division, urging media representatives to focus on sports rather than political controversies.
In response to a question regarding the treatment of U.S. athletes, Cox stated, “You will find it still a very welcoming place. We are a very welcoming country.” He noted that while there are differing opinions on various laws, the overall sentiment remains positive.
Defending Athletes and Their Voices
Cox was joined at the conference by Erin Mendenhall, Mayor of Salt Lake City, and Sarah Hirshland, Chief Executive of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee. Hirshland took the opportunity to defend athlete Hunter Hess, who faced criticism from Donald Trump after expressing his discontent with certain issues in the United States.
“It is important to us to ensure that anyone who is reacting to or commenting on something that someone said understands the totality and the context of what they said,” Hirshland stated. She expressed confidence that every member of Team USA is proud to represent the country and recognizes the potential of sports to unite people.
“We are all here for that,” she emphasized, reaffirming the positive role of the Olympics in fostering camaraderie and understanding among nations.
As preparations continue for the 2034 Winter Olympics, the emphasis on unity and inclusivity remains central to the discussions surrounding the event. With the eyes of the world on Utah, Governor Cox’s commitment to welcoming all is a vital message as the state gears up for what promises to be a significant occasion in the realm of international sports.
