Milan’s Winter Olympics: Beauty Meets a Quiet Atmosphere
The Winter Olympics in Milan present a striking juxtaposition of stunning architecture and a subdued atmosphere. While the city boasts its elegant streets, world-renowned fashion brands, and acclaimed dining options, the anticipated Olympic buzz appears notably absent. With the opening ceremonies having taken place, visitors and athletes alike are experiencing a quieter vibe than expected.
Milan’s grandeur is undeniably captivating. Under the shining sun, the historic streets are lined with the logos of luxury brands such as Prada, Gucci, and Ralph Lauren. Michelin-starred restaurants beckon, adding to the city’s allure. Yet, as one moves through the city, the lack of Olympic energy becomes apparent. On the eve of my first ice hockey match, I sought out a bar to connect with fellow fans, but found many establishments closed.
After several disappointments, I stumbled upon a lively Irish pub just before closing time. Inside, I met a visitor from Los Angeles, involved in planning the 2028 Summer Olympics. He expressed optimism about the energy in Los Angeles compared to Milan, stating, “From the moment you touch down at the airport, it’ll feel electric.”
As the night progressed, the pub buzzed with excitement, yet by 22:00, it was clear that even the final bar in Milan had its limitations. The bartender, after finishing her shift, left patrons seeking alternatives when the pub ran out of Guinness.
Challenges at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena
The following morning, I attended my first game at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. Unfortunately, the venue was not entirely ready for the Winter Olympics. Loose wires hung from the ceiling, and the seating capacity fell several thousand short of expectations due to construction delays. The absence of seats at one end, replaced by a giant black wall, added to the sense of unpreparedness.
Issues with the rink’s dimensions nearly led to a significant blow to the event’s credibility. Just weeks before the Olympics, the NHL threatened not to send players to Milan due to concerns about ice quality and rink specifications. Thankfully, these issues were resolved, allowing the games to proceed.
Inside the arena, innovative food shops operated on a “future market” concept, reminiscent of Amazon Fresh stores in London. Patrons could use their cards to access the shops, with sensors determining charges as they exited. Unfortunately, the stores only accepted Visa cards due to sponsorship agreements, causing frustration among many American fans armed with American Express cards, resulting in longer lines.
Despite these logistical challenges, the atmosphere inside the arena was vibrant. Fans cheered enthusiastically for their teams, highlighting the spirit of competition that is central to the Olympic experience.
In contrast, the city outside seemed to remain indifferent, reflecting a sense of disconnect between the grand event and local engagement. While Milan showcases its beauty, the muted response to the Winter Olympics raises questions about the city’s readiness to host such a significant international event. As the games progress, it remains to be seen whether the atmosphere will shift to match the excitement expected from an Olympic host city.
