Arne Slot Backs Marcus Rashford, Raises Questions for Manchester United
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has offered strong support for Marcus Rashford, suggesting Manchester United might be making a mistake by offloading the talented forward. Rashford, who is currently on loan at Barcelona, has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence this season after struggling under former United coach Ruben Amorim. During his time in Spain, the 28-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 34 appearances.
Slot’s endorsement of Rashford dates back to February 2025, when Liverpool faced Aston Villa in the Premier League. He praised the England international’s speed and confidence with the ball, stating, “I know Marcus Rashford as I follow the Premier League. The first time I faced him was on the USA tour and I was really impressed with how fast he is and comfortable on the ball.” Slot expressed confidence that Rashford would continue to showcase his quality in the coming months.
Currently managed by Michael Carrick, Manchester United faces uncertainty regarding Rashford’s future. Reports indicate that the club is still inclined to sell him, despite his impressive performances since joining Barcelona on loan. The agreement between United and Barcelona reportedly includes an option for the Spanish club to purchase Rashford for around £26 million. Yet, in light of his improved form, United is reconsidering this arrangement.
Rashford’s resurgence has significantly boosted his market value, prompting speculation about his future at Barcelona. Despite this, United remain firm on the £26 million option fee, even as Barcelona seeks to renegotiate terms. Rashford has publicly expressed his desire to remain at the Camp Nou beyond this season, complicating any potential recall by United.
In a late 2025 interview with Barcelona’s YouTube channel, Rashford shared his positive experience in Spain. “I’m really enjoying my time in Spain. The weather is the best part. It’s a very big change,” he said. “I just have to be in the right position. I’ll keep trying to do this. We have to keep going like this to be our best. We have a lot more to do this season.”
He continued, “I’m enjoying this football club, and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game, so to play here is an honour.” Rashford reflected on his long tenure at United, stating, “People forget this, but 23 years of my life was with Manchester United. Sometimes you just need a change. I think maybe this is the case with me.”
As discussions surrounding Rashford’s future intensify, the question remains whether Manchester United will secure his return or allow him to continue thriving in Spain. His impressive form and Slot’s endorsement could sway opinions within the club, making the upcoming months critical in determining Rashford’s path. As he adapts to his new environment, Rashford’s ambition to improve and contribute meaningfully remains evident, leaving fans and analysts alike eager to see what comes next.
