Hywel Dda Health Board Lifts Mask Mandate in Hospitals
Hywel Dda University Health Board has announced the removal of mask-wearing requirements across its hospitals and healthcare facilities, effective from February 23, 2026. This decision follows a period of low and stable infection levels within the health board’s sites, which has prompted officials to reassess safety protocols for staff, patients, and visitors.
The health board emphasizes that masks will still be required in specific clinical situations. These include circumstances involving patients with confirmed or suspected respiratory infections, during outbreak management, when caring for extremely vulnerable patients, and during certain medical procedures that align with infection prevention and control guidelines.
In a statement regarding the change, Sharon Daniel, Executive Director of Nursing, Quality and Patient Experience, highlighted the commitment to safety. “Our priority is always the safety and wellbeing of patients, staff, and visitors,” she stated. “With infection levels remaining low, we can safely remove mask requirements while maintaining essential protections for the most vulnerable.”
Daniel expressed gratitude towards the health board’s staff for their professionalism during challenging times. She also thanked patients and visitors for their cooperation in efforts to limit the spread of respiratory infections, particularly throughout the winter months.
The health board has issued important reminders for visitors. Individuals are advised to refrain from attending healthcare settings if they feel unwell and to wait 48 hours after recovering from flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues before visiting. This precaution aims to reduce the risk of virus transmission and safeguard the health of vulnerable patients and staff.
As respiratory viruses remain prevalent during this time of year, the health board will continue to monitor infection trends and service pressures closely. If necessary, they will reassess their approach to mask-wearing and other health protocols.
Patients are encouraged to practice good hand hygiene and seek seasonal vaccinations if eligible. Flu vaccinations will be available until March 31, providing an effective means of protection against influenza. To learn more about eligibility and access to vaccinations, individuals can visit the NHS website or contact the health board directly.
By maintaining vigilance and adhering to health guidelines, the Hywel Dda University Health Board aims to ensure a safe environment for everyone who requires healthcare services.
