Dermatologist Reveals Secrets to Combat Oily Hair Quickly

Many individuals experience frustration when their hair becomes greasy shortly after washing. According to dermatologist Derm Guru, there are several effective strategies to address this common issue. In a recent TikTok video, which has garnered significant attention with over 1.6 million followers, she shared insights on how to manage oily hair.
The scalp, much like the skin, produces sebum and collects dirt, sweat, and dead skin cells. Regular washing is essential to maintain healthy hair and a clean scalp. However, factors such as hair texture can influence how quickly hair becomes greasy. For instance, those with fine hair may notice oil accumulation more rapidly due to the smaller surface area of their strands, as noted by the beauty brand Odele.
In her video, Derm Guru addresses a common practice known as “hair training.” This technique involves reducing the frequency of washes with the hope of training the scalp to produce less oil. Derm Guru advises against this method, stating, “You cannot just manifest less hair oil production…you need to wash it every day for it to be less greasy.” She emphasizes that oil production is largely genetic and cannot be altered through wishful thinking.
Essential Tips for Managing Oily Hair
Derm Guru provides several practical tips for maintaining cleaner, less greasy hair. One often-overlooked aspect is the hygiene of hairbrushes. “Dead skin cells can build up in your brush,” she explains. Using a dirty brush can transfer oil back to the scalp, exacerbating greasiness.
Another critical point she raises is the importance of washing pillowcases. “If you have oily hair, you should be washing your pillowcases at least weekly, if not every two to three days,” she advises. This practice can help remove excess oil and dirt that may accumulate overnight.
In addition, many individuals misuse dry shampoo. Derm Guru suggests applying it at bedtime, on a clean, dry scalp, rather than waiting until hair appears greasy. “Dry shampoo ain’t gonna do Jack if you only use it when your hair is greasy,” she notes. This proactive approach can help absorb oil before it becomes visible.
Additional Techniques for Healthier Hair
To further combat oiliness, Derm Guru recommends cleaning and exfoliating the scalp with products containing glycolic acid. This can help remove buildup and promote a healthier scalp environment.
Another technique she advocates is using a hair dryer rather than allowing hair to air dry. “A hair dryer can help absorb some of the oil in your hair and help it appear less greasy,” she explains. This method can be particularly effective for those struggling with oily hair.
By following these dermatologist-recommended tips, individuals may find relief from the persistent problem of greasy hair. With proper care and attention to routine, achieving clean and manageable hair is within reach. Would you try these techniques? Share your thoughts below.
