Belfast Gaelic Club Approved for Major Extension Despite Objections
A West Belfast Gaelic Athletic Club has received approval for a significant extension and renovation, despite facing opposition from local residents. St Teresa’s GAC, located at Glen Road Heights, successfully applied for an expansion of its clubhouse to include an indoor sports hall, changing rooms, a fitness suite, and a new pitch.
The Belfast City Council Planning Committee voted unanimously in favor of the application during its meeting in February 2024. The approved project entails relocating a grass pitch, creating a new 3G training pitch with integrated ball walls, and constructing a building designated for club storage and match day sales. Additional developments will enhance the site with increased parking, new fencing, floodlighting, dugouts, and improved pathways.
Currently, the site features two large sports pitches along with a clubhouse and associated parking facilities. A nursery school is also situated on the grounds opposite the clubhouse. Although statutory consultees raised no formal objections, final comments from both Shared Environmental Services and the DfI Rivers Agency were pending at the time of the council’s decision.
Despite the approval, local residents submitted 14 letters of objection. Concerns included the design’s compatibility with the residential area and potential issues related to floodlighting, noise, traffic, and parking. Many objectors highlighted health and safety worries, citing increased air pollution and its effects on children, alongside concerns about mental health impacts on the community, wildlife, and the loss of green space and scenic views.
The council’s planning report outlined the proposal as an extension of the existing clubhouse, formalizing the current parking area and adding a new training pitch. The report noted that the development would result in a net loss of open space, approximately 2,600 square meters, which constitutes around 7 percent of the overall site. Despite this, officials argued that the predominant use of the area is for recreational purposes, and the extension aims to enhance existing facilities.
While objectors argued that the project would obstruct their views of the surrounding landscape, the report concluded that the new pitches would have a negligible visual impact. It also stated that the clubhouse extension would not exceed the visual footprint of the current building. All proposed structures are deemed appropriate for a sports facility.
The report further clarified that the loss of green space would not significantly detract from the overall green infrastructure, noting that additional green areas exist outside the development’s boundaries. Council officers expressed confidence that the proposal would not adversely affect biodiversity or sustainable drainage systems, given the ample surrounding green space.
As the project moves forward, the local community remains divided. Supporters believe the expansion will enhance recreational opportunities, while opponents voice persistent concerns over environmental and social impacts. As developments unfold, the balance between community interests and facility growth will remain a focal point of discussion in West Belfast.
