Buducnost Women’s Handball Team Reflects on Missed Champions League Opportunity
The Buducnost Women’s Handball Club has concluded its Champions League journey earlier than anticipated, failing to secure a spot in the knockout stage. Following a disappointing draw against Esbjerg and a victory in Romania against Glorija, the team fell short of the crucial sixth position in Group A after a home defeat to Borussia in the tenth round. The mounting pressure appeared to weigh heavily on the players, leading to four consecutive losses after what seemed to be a promising start.
Zoran Abramovic, the head coach who joined the team just before a match against Đer on September 27, 2023, identified a lack of depth as a significant issue. “Every coach has a philosophy, and I prefer to involve all 16 players in the game,” he stated during his initial presentation. Abramovic emphasized the need for a dynamic playing style that minimizes reliance on a structured attack against organized defenses. His approach aimed to foster a more fluid and fast-paced game, which required adequate player rotation—something the team struggled to achieve this season.
The challenges faced were reflected in their performance. In a critical match against Storhamar, Buducnost scored only 14 goals, a stark contrast to their 34-goal performance against Esbjerg and 38 goals in Romania. Abramovic noted, “Once the players began to believe in the system and the possibility of scoring easy goals, changes started to occur.”
Despite the setbacks, Abramovic remains optimistic about the team’s potential for the future. The coaching staff is currently in discussions to finalize the roster for the upcoming season, with a focus on integrating young talent into the squad. Players like Ivana Savic, a promising left-back from Trebjesa, have caught the club’s attention. Abramovic has expressed a desire to secure her services, even amidst competition from other clubs.
The club’s strategy moving forward involves loaning out younger players to gain experience while maintaining their rights. “We need to find a balance between giving them game time and keeping them in our system,” Abramovic explained. Players such as Nina Markovic and Elena Mitrovic are expected to benefit from this approach, with the potential for further development.
In terms of new signings, Buducnost has made a notable addition in Đurđina Jaukovic, the captain of the Montenegrin national team. This move is seen as a crucial step in addressing the team’s rotation issues and enhancing their competitive edge. Abramovic also mentioned interest in Ivona Pavicevic, which could significantly bolster the squad’s quality.
The coach is gearing up for the next season with a clear agenda: to refine their strategies and technical skills. “We will focus on eliminating technical errors and improving our transition game. This is essential if we want to avoid missing out on opportunities like we did in the Champions League,” he stated.
As the team prepares for a break from high-stakes matches, the emphasis will shift to training and preparation for the upcoming league season. Abramovic’s leadership and strategic vision will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead, ensuring that Buducnost can bounce back stronger and ready to compete at the highest levels of handball.
