Wu-Tang Clan Co-Founder Oliver ‘Power’ Grant Dies at 52
Oliver ‘Power’ Grant, a pivotal figure in the Wu-Tang Clan, has passed away at the age of 52. His death was confirmed by the legendary hip-hop group through their social media channels on February 25, 2024, accompanied by a heartfelt tribute: “Rest in Power, Power.”
In a statement shared with Rolling Stone, Grant’s family and the Wu-Tang Clan revealed that he succumbed to a “courageous and hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.” The statement detailed that he was “a true fighter until the end” and was surrounded by loved ones, including his mother, children, and closest friends.
Legacy of a Visionary
Born in 1973 in Jamaica and later raised in Staten Island, New York, Grant played an instrumental role in shaping the Wu-Tang Clan’s early success. He served as an executive producer for their initial recordings and was a key figure in launching their fashion line, **Wu Wear**, in 1995. Grant’s early financial investment in the group during the early 1990s helped them produce their debut single, “Protect Ya Neck,” which laid the groundwork for their groundbreaking album, **Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)**, released in 1993.
The tribute emphasized Grant’s deep connection to the Park Hill neighborhood, stating, “From those streets, he rose to become a visionary force, a pillar of the Wu-Tang family, and a global architect of culture.” It concluded with a poignant reminder of his lasting impact: “Greatness is not what you have, but what you give.”
Following the announcement of his death, several members of the Wu-Tang Clan expressed their grief and shared personal tributes. Method Man wrote: “Paradise my brother safe travels! I am not OK.” GZA added, “We couldn’t have done it without him. Wu wouldn’t have come to fruition without Power. His passing is a profound loss to us all.” Raekwon echoed these sentiments, stating, “POWER we been everywhere …. now you everywhere!” Ghostface Killah communicated his sorrow through a series of broken-heart emojis alongside an angelic “Power” logo.
Upcoming Recognition and Reflection
The news of Grant’s passing coincides with Wu-Tang Clan being nominated for the **Rock & Roll Hall of Fame** in 2026. Despite his significant contributions to the group, Grant was not included in the nominee roster, as he was not a performing member.
Grant will be remembered not only for his role in the music industry but also for his profound influence on the culture surrounding hip-hop. The legacy he leaves behind is one of dedication, innovation, and an enduring love for family and community. His passing marks a significant loss for both the Wu-Tang Clan and the broader music community, as he was a figure who embodied the spirit of collaboration and creativity that defines the genre.
