Illness Hits Newcastle Squad Ahead of Clash with Manchester United
As many as 13 players could miss the crucial match between Newcastle United and Manchester United this evening at St. James’ Park due to an illness affecting the Newcastle squad. This unexpected turn of events has left Newcastle manager Eddie Howe facing significant challenges ahead of the Premier League clash.
Newcastle’s troubles began with the news that their £69 million signing, Nick Woltemade, has fallen ill. Additionally, Jacob Ramsey, who was already struggling during Newcastle’s defeat to Everton last weekend, is being closely monitored for his condition. The club will conduct further assessments on Ramsey before the match. In a possible boost for the Magpies, Tino Livramento could return, although Howe stopped short of confirming his inclusion in the matchday squad.
The situation has already seen Newcastle without key players, including midfielder duo Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley, both ruled out of the match due to injury. Defensive concerns also linger, as Emil Krafth and Fabian Schar have been confirmed as sidelined. This adds up to a total of seven players who are at risk of missing the game, significantly impacting Newcastle’s lineup.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Howe addressed the illness within the squad. He stated, “Nick Woltemade has come down ill. Let’s see, we will give him every chance. There is obviously an illness in the squad.” On the potential return of Livramento, he noted, “Tino is getting closer and closer, but this game possibly comes too soon for him. We’re desperate for him to become available, but it has to be at the right time.”
Manchester United is also grappling with its own injury concerns ahead of the match. Defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are both doubts following their recent match against Crystal Palace. Assistant coach Michael Carrick commented on their conditions, expressing optimism while acknowledging the uncertainty: “We’re hoping so, we’re working towards it. They weren’t feeling too good, so we’ve still got a bit of time before the game, and we’ll just have to see how they feel.”
In addition to Shaw and Maguire, United were already missing several players during their victory over Crystal Palace, including Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Patrick Dorgu, and Matthijs de Ligt. With these injuries, United could potentially be without six players for the critical fixture.
As both teams navigate their respective challenges, tonight’s match promises to be a test of depth and resilience for both Newcastle and Manchester United. The outcome could have significant implications for their standings in the league as they seek valuable points in this intense Premier League season.
