Eleven Complaints Against Peterborough Councillors Since February
A recent report has disclosed that there have been a total of eleven complaints lodged against city councillors in Peterborough since February 2023. This update will be presented to the Peterborough City Council’s constitution and ethics committee on July 28, 2023, and it outlines potential breaches of the authority’s code of conduct by both city and parish councillors.
Since the last update on February 3, 2023, the monitoring officer received these complaints, examining each for adherence to the established code. Of the eleven complaints, four were dismissed as they did not meet the criteria necessary for further consideration under the code. Additionally, another four complaints were determined to require no further action, indicating that they could not be substantiated or did not warrant an investigation.
The report indicates that two of the complaints are currently undergoing full investigations, while one complaint resulted in a city councillor issuing a formal apology to the complainant involved. In this same timeframe, one complaint against a parish councillor was also filed but was rejected due to insufficient details to determine if it fell within the parameters of the code of conduct.
Ongoing Investigations and Previous Complaints
Two complaints that were submitted prior to February 3 remain open. One of these investigations, which involved two councillors, has concluded, resulting in a finding that one councillor breached the code of conduct. This councillor has been advised to extend a formal apology to the complainant.
The second complaint from this earlier period is still under assessment. Described as having a “complex nature,” it is expected to be finalized shortly. The council has been approached for further comment regarding these ongoing matters, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in local governance.
This report underscores the continuing scrutiny of councillor conduct within Peterborough, reflecting the community’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in local leadership.
