LGBTQ+ Athletes Set to Shine at 2026 Winter Paralympics
The 2026 Winter Paralympics, set to take place in Milano Cortina, Italy, from March 6 to March 15, promises to showcase remarkable talent, including several standout athletes from the LGBTQ+ community. Following the success of Team LGBTQ+ at the recent Winter Olympics, expectations are high for these athletes to add to their medal counts. At the last Winter Olympic Games, members of Team LGBTQ+ secured a record-breaking 11 medals across various sports.
Among the more than 600 athletes from 56 countries competing, several LGBTQ+ participants are generating excitement. Here are some of the athletes to watch closely:
Jake Adicoff: A Visionary Cross-Country Skier
Jake Adicoff, a 30-year-old cross-country skier from the United States, is a four-time Paralympic medalist and a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ athletes. Adicoff, who has been visually impaired since birth, has earned three silver and one gold medal in previous Games. His advocacy work includes collaboration with the Out Athlete Fund, where he emphasizes the importance of visibility for both para athletes and LGBTQ+ individuals in sports.
Adicoff expressed his commitment to showcasing the capabilities of para athletes, stating, “We, as para athletes, have a very important role to showcase ability… I think that same thing is really necessary for queers in sports.” His presence at the upcoming Games is anticipated to inspire many.
Jo Butterfield: From Gold Medalist to Wheelchair Curler
Another athlete to cheer for is Jo Butterfield, who has made a notable transition from competing in club and discus throwing to wheelchair curling. Butterfield, a member of both Team LGBTQ+ and Team Great Britain, previously set a world record in the club throw at the 2016 Paralympics and won a gold medal. Now, she aims for success in the mixed doubles wheelchair curling event.
After a challenging start in the tournament, Butterfield and her partner, Jason Kean, secured a crucial victory against Latvia, winning 6-5. Reflecting on her journey, Butterfield remarked, “Since I first became a Paralympian, I’ve carried the dream of pushing boundaries and seeing what’s possible.” Her determination shines through, particularly given the life-altering surgery she underwent that left her paralyzed.
Michael O’Hearn: The Alpine Ski Racer
Representing Team USA, Michael O’Hearn is gearing up for his debut in alpine ski racing at the 2026 Paralympics. Born with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, O’Hearn has embraced skiing since the age of three. This year marks a significant milestone as he competes in the men’s standing alpine events, particularly the slalom.
O’Hearn shared his excitement on social media, stating, “Ski racing is my purpose… I’ve worked tirelessly to reach this milestone and it’s completely surreal.” His passion for the sport is evident, and he aims to inspire others through his journey.
Overview of the Winter Paralympic Games
The Winter Paralympic Games will feature six sports over a span of ten days, including para-alpine skiing, wheelchair curling, para-snowboard, para-biathlon, para-cross country skiing, and para-ice hockey. In total, there are 79 events, with multiple categories for each sport. For instance, alpine skiing encompasses five disciplines: slalom, giant slalom, super-G, downhill, and super combined.
For those in the UK, coverage of the event will be available on Channel 4, with live streaming options and nightly round-up shows highlighting key moments.
As the world prepares for the Winter Paralympic Games, the stories of these athletes serve as a reminder of the power of determination and representation in sports. The LGBTQ+ community continues to break barriers and inspire fans around the globe, making the 2026 Paralympics an event to watch closely.
