Chibuike Amaechi Survives Gun Attack in Rivers Amid Violence
Former Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi escaped a gun attack on March 15, 2024, while en route to his hometown, Ubima, in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. The incident occurred as Amaechi was heading to participate in an e-registration event for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Gunmen, believed to be political thugs, ambushed his convoy, leading to a violent exchange of gunfire.
The assault took place between Ubima and the neighbouring Omuanwa community, where the attackers engaged Amaechi’s security team in a gun duel. Prior to this attack, the thugs had reportedly set fire to the Ward 8 office of the ADC in Ubima, and residents indicated that gunfire had erupted at Amaechi’s family residence the previous night. This violence coincided with reports of assaults on party members in Igwuruta during a sensitisation programme earlier that day.
Details of the Attack and Response
Before Amaechi’s arrival around noon, suspected thugs had established roadblocks along the route, preventing buses carrying ADC supporters from reaching the event. Reports indicate that the assailants fired shots into the community, damaging the gate of Amaechi’s residence. Fortunately, security personnel assigned to Amaechi’s convoy returned fire, compelling the attackers to retreat into nearby bushes.
Addressing the gathered supporters following the incident, Amaechi expressed gratitude for the prompt action of law enforcement agencies. He specifically thanked the state Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their professional response. “I will thank the Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS. They showed a lot of professionalism immediately I contacted them,” he stated. Amaechi acknowledged that he had not expected such cooperation, given the circumstances.
Despite the harrowing experience, Amaechi called for calm among his supporters and emphasized the necessity of identifying and prosecuting those responsible for the attacks. “They must also know that this cannot continue. The way they will show us that this cannot continue is by prosecuting those involved in this crime,” he added.
Call for Enhanced Security
The former governor urged the state government to enhance security measures to prevent further violence, particularly in the lead-up to elections. He warned that failure to protect citizens could result in individuals taking matters into their own hands. “On election day, they will know whether we will vote or not,” he affirmed, encouraging ADC members to increase their mobilization efforts in anticipation of future elections.
Amaechi’s experience highlights the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, as violence continues to disrupt political activities. As the ADC prepares for future electoral challenges, the need for a secure environment remains paramount for both party members and the broader community.
