Apple Music Mandates AI Disclosure Tags for All Content

Apple Music has implemented a new policy requiring record labels and music distributors to disclose the use of artificial intelligence in the creation of content uploaded to its platform. This initiative, announced on October 25, 2023, introduces a system called “Transparency Tags,” which mandates labels to indicate AI involvement across various elements of a release, including album artwork, individual tracks, musical compositions, and music videos.

Under this new framework, labels and distributors are obligated to flag any release where AI significantly contributed to the content. The policy specifically addresses four key areas: artwork, sound recordings, musical compositions, and visual elements of music videos. For album artwork, the tagging requirement applies when AI has meaningfully influenced the visuals, encompassing both static designs and motion graphics. At the track level, a tag is necessary if AI generated a substantial part of a sound recording. Similarly, if AI was involved in creating lyrics or other structural elements of a song, the composition tag must be applied. The music video tag is required when AI produces significant visual components within a video.

According to Billboard, Apple Music has characterized the tagging system as “a concrete first step toward the transparency necessary for the industry to establish best practices and policies that work for everyone.” The intent behind these tags is to clarify instances where AI has played a meaningful role in content production, distinguishing these cases from those where AI tools were used only for minor technical assistance.

Apple Music’s initiative aligns it with several other streaming services responding to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated music. For instance, French streaming service Deezer recently revealed that approximately 60,000 fully AI-generated songs are uploaded to its platform every day. Other platforms are adopting various strategies to address this trend. Deezer has developed its own detection technology to automatically identify and label AI-generated tracks, while also excluding them from editorial and algorithmic recommendations. On the other hand, Spotify has concentrated on combating issues such as deepfakes and artificial streaming manipulation, collaborating with the music metadata organization Digital Data Exchange (DDEX) to craft a broader standard for AI disclosure across the industry.

High-resolution streaming platform Qobuz has also taken steps to require labels to identify fully AI-generated releases while prioritizing human-created music in its editorial selections and recommendation systems. In contrast, some services have implemented more stringent measures. Bandcamp has prohibited music that is entirely or substantially generated by AI, while iHeartRadio has introduced its “Guaranteed Human” initiative, which excludes AI-generated tracks from its radio programming.

Apple Music’s approach, however, does not extend to banning AI-assisted content. Instead, the platform has opted for transparency, allowing listeners to understand how AI may have influenced a release and enabling them to make informed choices about their engagement with the music. As the use of generative technology continues to grow in music production, industry observers note that both platforms and artists are navigating the complex boundaries between innovation, creativity, and authenticity.

This policy marks a significant shift in the music streaming landscape, as stakeholders adapt to the evolving role of technology in the creation of music and its associated content. The introduction of Transparency Tags by Apple Music may pave the way for broader industry standards regarding AI use in creative processes.
