US Intensifies Military Action Against Iran Amid Ongoing Conflict
The United States has escalated its military operations in Iran, executing what has been described as its largest bombing campaign to date during the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The offensive, which marks the seventh day of hostilities, has resulted in significant destruction, particularly in Tehran, where air sirens sounded as explosions reverberated through the city.
Reports indicate that the US military targeted Mehrabad International Airport and other strategic locations, with intense fires and smoke visible in the early hours. The conflict has already claimed over 1,200 lives in Iran, while also spreading into neighboring regions, impacting countries across the Gulf and Lebanon.
Scott Bessent, a senior official in the administration of President Donald Trump, characterized the recent strikes as the “biggest bombing campaign” in Iran. In an interview with Fox Business, Bessent emphasized the focus on Iranian missile launchers and manufacturing facilities, asserting that the campaign aims to significantly degrade Iran’s military capabilities.
The US Central Command reported that it has struck over 3,000 targets within the first week of its operation, named Operation Epic Fury. The command stated that this aggressive military approach is far from slowing down, indicating a sustained commitment to the campaign.
In a provocative statement, President Trump asserted that the US will not consider any agreements with Iran other than “unconditional surrender.” He further suggested a rebranding of his “Make America Great Again” slogan to “Make Iran Great Again,” reflecting his disdain for diplomatic negotiations.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian dismissed Trump’s remarks, labeling the notion of unconditional surrender as a “dream that they should take to their graves.” Pezeshkian called for a diplomatic resolution and expressed regret for the impact of the conflict on neighboring countries, urging restraint on missile attacks unless provoked.
In light of the escalating violence, significant disruptions are occurring across the Persian Gulf. Dubai International Airport, a major travel hub, has suspended flights due to safety concerns. Emirates, the flagship carrier of the United Arab Emirates, announced a halt to all flights until further notice, while evacuation flights have started operating from nearby Oman and Saudi Arabia.
Approximately 140,000 British nationals have registered with the Foreign Office for assistance as the conflict escalates. The first evacuation flights from the region have begun, with one landing at Stansted Airport on the night of March 15, 2024, followed by another at Gatwick Airport. An estimated 300,000 British nationals remain in the Middle East, facing uncertainty as the situation develops.
The White House has indicated that the conflict could extend for up to six weeks, although President Trump hinted at the possibility of a prolonged military engagement. Concerns are mounting regarding the potential ramifications on the global economy, particularly as the Strait of Hormuz—responsible for approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply—has effectively been closed since the conflict began. Iran has threatened to target vessels linked to the US, Israel, or Europe, further complicating international shipping routes.
As military operations continue, the situation remains fluid, with the international community closely monitoring developments in the region.
