Hotel Group Enhances Staff Accommodation to Tackle Recruitment Crisis
The Turas Hotels Group has completed significant upgrades to staff accommodation at its two prominent hotels in Strathspey, as part of a broader strategy to address ongoing staffing challenges within the hospitality sector. The enhancements at the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore and the Boat Country Inn in Boat of Garten come in response to a troubling trend in the industry, where the Office for National Statistics reported a loss of 59,000 jobs in UK hospitality last year.
Recognizing the acute need for qualified personnel, the independent hotel group has initiated a comprehensive review aimed at bolstering recruitment efforts in the Highlands. The group operates six properties in the region and is committed to creating a supportive environment for its employees. The improvements to staff quarters are just one element of a larger programme designed to enhance job satisfaction and retention.
As part of this initiative, starting from April 1, 2024, all employees within the Turas group will benefit from a structured training and development plan. This plan includes online inductions, which will familiarize new hires with the layout of the properties and introduce them to key management personnel, including general managers. Such measures aim to mitigate the anxiety often associated with starting a new job.
In addition to the upgrades in accommodation and training, Turas Hotels is implementing a range of supportive measures to enhance employee experience. The group has introduced a staff discount programme, incentives, and free online training courses, along with regular weekly check-ins to ensure all staff feel supported in their roles.
Delia Keating, the group’s recruitment and social media manager, highlighted the challenges posed by the geographical location of the hotels, stating, “Recruitment is a major challenge, especially given our geographic locations in the Highlands and the lack of private accommodation available. We see a shortage of staff, particularly kitchen staff, and that is why we are investing in discounted accommodation and launching our new training and development plan.”
Keating emphasized the importance of making potential employees feel excited and proud about joining the team. “When people are due to start a new job, there can be a bit of anxiety. The induction videos are designed to make things familiar before they even arrive. They will see where they are going and will meet key staff like their General Manager,” she explained.
The initiative aims not only to attract talent but also to foster a sense of belonging and enthusiasm among employees. By enhancing the workplace environment and providing comprehensive support, Turas Hotels Group hopes to create a thriving workforce in the Highlands, ultimately benefiting the hospitality industry as a whole.
As the sector continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic and staffing shortages, the proactive approach taken by Turas Hotels may set a precedent for other organizations facing similar challenges.
