Detroit Lions Sign Isiah Pacheco to Bolster Running Game
The Detroit Lions have finalized a deal to acquire running back Isiah Pacheco, enhancing their backfield alongside Jahmyr Gibbs. This move comes after the Lions traded David Montgomery to the Houston Texans last week, creating a need for additional depth at the position.
Pacheco, 27, spent the last four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he served as the starting running back for a significant portion of his tenure. Last season, he played in 13 games, amassing 462 rushing yards and contributing two total touchdowns. The Chiefs recently acquired Kenneth Walker III, the Super Bowl MVP, indicating a shift in their offensive strategy.
Career Highlights and Challenges
Drafted in 2022 with the 251st pick, Pacheco quickly became a vital component of one of Kansas City’s most successful draft classes. He secured the starting role over Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs’ first-round selection in 2020, midway through his rookie season. Pacheco’s relentless running style played an essential role in helping the Chiefs clinch back-to-back Super Bowl titles, positioning the franchise as a dominant force in the league.
However, Pacheco’s career faced a significant hurdle in Week 2 of the 2024 season when he fractured the fibula in his right leg. This injury sidelined him for ten games and hindered his performance in subsequent seasons. During the 2023 season, he achieved a career-high of 935 rushing yards and nine total touchdowns, but his productivity waned last year, as he did not record a single rushing attempt exceeding 20 yards.
As Pacheco joins the Lions, he aims to rejuvenate his career and provide a powerful running option alongside Gibbs. The Lions are looking to build on their recent successes, and Pacheco’s experience in high-pressure situations could prove invaluable.
The NFL landscape continues to evolve with various teams making strategic moves leading up to the season, and Pacheco’s addition to the Lions is a noteworthy development for fans and analysts alike. His performance will be closely watched as he seeks to reclaim his form and contribute significantly to Detroit’s offensive capabilities.
