Lykke Li Unveils New Single ‘Knife In The Heart’ Ahead of Album Release
Lykke Li has released her latest single, titled “Knife In The Heart,” as a preview of her upcoming album, The Afterparty, scheduled for release on May 8, 2024, through Neon Gold Records. The single showcases a blend of introspective lyrics and vibrant instrumentation, marking a significant evolution in her musical style.
In “Knife In The Heart,” Lykke Li employs a distinctive sound characterized by a droning EBow, intense orchestration, and a memorable chant in the chorus. She described the track as “my brutalist nursery rhyme anthem — the emo girl in me, fully unleashed.” The emotional depth is accentuated by the involvement of her son and his friend in the chorus, which creates a unique contrast against the musical backdrop.
Reflecting on the themes of the song, Lykke Li stated, “A world totally collapsing in front of us and all we really have left is our humanity.” She expressed her ambition to hear entire stadiums chanting the line, “This Life This Life is a Knife in the Heart,” illustrating her intention to capture the essence of contemporary existence.
Exploring New Themes in Upcoming Album
The forthcoming album represents a departure from Lykke Li’s previous work, notably the 2022 release EYEYE, which received a four-star review from NME. Critics praised it as a “record that breathes, sighs and will leave you lost in the same dazed reverie that these tracks were born from.” With The Afterparty, the artist plans to explore more profound themes, moving away from romantic fantasies to confront issues of mortality, hedonism, and impermanence.
The album cover reinforces this thematic shift, portraying Lykke Li’s face obscured by translucent tights. She remarked, “I find that we’re in an era where everyone is talking about ‘My higher self.’ Fuck that. This is an album dealing with your lower self: your need for revenge, your shame, despair.”
The complete tracklist for The Afterparty includes:
– Not Gon Cry
– Happy Now
– Lucky Again
– Famous Last Words
– Future Fear
– So Happy I Could Die
– Sick Of Love
– Knife In The Heart
– Euphoria
Continuing Collaborative Efforts and Upcoming Performances
Following the release of EYEYE, Lykke Li has remained active in the music scene, sharing standalone singles such as “Midnight Shining” and a reimagined version of “Highway to Your Heart.” Additionally, she contributed to the song “Beautiful That Way,” recorded for the upcoming 2025 film The Last Showgirl, featuring Pamela Anderson.
As Lykke Li gears up for her album launch, she will also join Wolf Alice this summer for their largest headline concert to date at Finsbury Park in London. This collaboration highlights her continued presence and influence in the contemporary music landscape.
Fans eagerly await the release of The Afterparty, which promises to deliver a unique sonic experience while addressing the complexities of modern life.
