Inquest Resumes for Jay Slater Following Teen’s Tragic Death

The inquest into the death of Jay Slater, a 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, resumes today at Preston Coroner’s Court. Slater went missing on June 17, 2022, after attending the NRG music festival at the Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas, Tenerife. His body was later found in a remote ravine following a prolonged search.
Initially, the inquest began in May but was halted due to the absence of several key witnesses who were present on the night of Slater’s disappearance. Despite extensive efforts to locate them, many could not be traced or were unavailable to give evidence. Today’s proceedings aim to bring these individuals forward to provide crucial insights into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s last moments.
Seeking Answers in the Tragic Case
During the initial hearing, Debbie Duncan, Slater’s mother, expressed her heartbreak and called for the inquest to be adjourned, emphasizing that the family still had unanswered questions about the events leading up to her son’s death. “We just want to know what happened,” Duncan stated, highlighting the family’s desperate search for clarity.
The inquest’s resumption is critical as it is believed that the witnesses’ testimonies will shed light on Slater’s actions after he left the festival. Reports indicate that he attempted to walk back to his holiday rental apartment but did not arrive as expected. The lack of information regarding his whereabouts during that time raises significant concerns.
Community and Family Impact
The case has drawn attention not only from the local community in Lancashire but also from those who attended the festival and others who have followed the story. The search for answers is not just about finding closure for the Slater family but also about ensuring that similar tragedies can be prevented in the future.
As the inquest continues, the hope is that the testimonies from the witnesses will finally provide the answers that Jay Slater’s family has been seeking since that fateful night. Updates will be provided as more information comes to light during the proceedings in Preston.
