Mechanic Praises Honda’s Reliability While Discussing Future of UK Manufacturing

A motor engineer has publicly endorsed Honda as the manufacturer of the world’s most reliable vehicles, while also discussing his personal vehicle preferences and the future of automotive manufacturing in the UK. James Goodhand, an experienced mechanic and author, shared his insights in an interview with Reach PLC, emphasizing Honda’s reputation for quality and endurance.
When asked to recommend a brand known for dependability, Goodhand did not hesitate to highlight Honda. He stated, “If the budget will stretch to it, buy Japanese. Best of all, Honda. They really are the world’s best vehicle engineers. If everyone drove a Honda I would go out of business.” His strong endorsement reflects a longstanding appreciation for the brand’s engineering excellence.
In his explanation, Goodhand noted the outstanding reliability of Honda vehicles, citing a specific example from his work. He mentioned maintaining a 20-year-old Honda Civic that has surpassed 200,000 miles. “Still, the engine ticks over so smoothly you could stand your cup of tea on it, and it’s so quiet you’re hard pushed to tell if it’s running. And this thing has covered enough miles to reach the moon,” he remarked, underscoring the vehicle’s durability.
In addition to his professional recommendations, Goodhand revealed his personal automotive choices. He currently owns a Volvo V90 and also cherishes a BMW M3 that he has had for fifteen years. He fondly recalled that this BMW served as the family car during significant moments, including bringing his son home from the maternity ward.
Goodhand’s praise for Honda is echoed by experts from WhatCar?, who have rigorously tested various compact vehicles. The Honda Jazz has consistently ranked among the top three for its practicality. Commenting on the vehicle, the review specialists noted, “The Honda Jazz is one of those cars that – like contestants on Britain’s Got Talent – are gifted in various ways but have so far not had the universal adoration they perhaps deserve.” Despite its acclaim for spaciousness and reliability, the Jazz has not achieved the commercial success of some competitors in the small car segment.
Future of Honda Manufacturing in the UK
As Honda enjoys recognition for its legacy and current models, discussions about its future in the UK manufacturing landscape have emerged. After nearly four decades of production in Swindon, speculation regarding Honda’s operational status intensified following the closure of the South Marston plant in 2021. This facility had been producing Honda vehicles since 1985.
Plans for the site are now underway to transform it into Panattoni Park, a business hub valued at £900 million. Construction started last year, aiming to revitalize the area and boost the local economy. At the inauguration of the project, Jim Robbins, leader of the Swindon Borough Council, expressed optimism about the development. He stated, “I’m really pleased we are finally seeing development come forward on the old Honda site as it will future proof the Swindon economy, bringing thousands of new jobs and significant investment in biodiversity, local roads and public access.”
Robbins highlighted that this initiative sends a clear message that Swindon is open for business and on the rise, reinforcing the region’s economic resilience in the face of changes in the automotive industry.
In summary, while James Goodhand champions Honda for its unmatched reliability, the automotive giant’s future in the UK remains a topic of significant interest as local economies adapt to new manufacturing realities.
