New Health Centre to Revitalize Whitefield’s Former Library Site
A new health centre will be established on the site of a former library in Whitefield, following the completion of a land sale between local authorities and NHS leaders. This development will relocate Whitefield’s health services from the existing Uplands site, which has been deemed inadequate for modern healthcare needs. The library, which has remained vacant since 2017 except for a brief period as a COVID-19 vaccination site, is set to be transformed into a facility that meets contemporary medical standards.
Plans for Modern Medical Facilities
The decision to develop the health centre comes as part of a broader plan by Bury Council to enhance public services in the area. The council indicated that the move will not only address the shortcomings of the Uplands site but will also free up that location for potential future projects. While no specific plans for the Uplands site have been confirmed, further announcements are anticipated as part of the ongoing regeneration efforts.
In response to earlier concerns regarding the sale process, a spokesperson for Bury Council clarified that allegations suggesting a breach of the 1972 Local Government Act were unfounded. The council sought external legal advice, which confirmed that the sale was conducted lawfully. The agreed sale price for the library site is reported to be between £500,000 and £600,000.
Coun Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, hailed the finalization of the sale, stating, “This is really a win-win situation for Whitefield residents. Buildings which have lain empty for years will be brought back into use, and medical services will remain in the town centre in modern, high-quality premises.” He emphasized that the new health centre aligns with the goals of the Whitefield town plan, aimed at improving the local environment and maintaining Whitefield’s reputation as a desirable place to live.
Enhanced Healthcare Access for Residents
Professor Colin Scales, deputy chief executive of NHS Greater Manchester, expressed optimism about the new facility, noting that it will significantly improve healthcare access for residents in Whitefield and surrounding areas. He stated, “This move will give patients in Whitefield and the surrounding area access to a much-improved health centre, in a building that’s more modern, more accessible, and better suited to delivering care today and in the future.”
The existing premises at Uplands have served the community for many years but are no longer fit for purpose. The new site will provide a better working environment for staff, ultimately enhancing the healthcare experience for patients.
Construction is expected to begin either late this year or in early 2026, with the new health centre anticipated to be operational by mid to late 2027. Throughout this transition, patients registered at the Uplands will continue to access services as usual, ensuring that there will be no disruption to their appointments.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in improving local health services, reflecting a commitment by both Bury Council and NHS Greater Manchester to prioritize the health and wellbeing of the community.
