Discrimination Reports in Football Reach Record High of 1,398

Reports of discrimination in football have surged to an alarming new high, according to the anti-discrimination charity, Kick It Out. During the 2024-25 season, the organization received a total of 1,398 reports of abuse, surpassing the previous record of 1,332 reports from the 2023-24 season. This increase highlights a troubling trend across various forms of discrimination, with racism continuing to be the most reported issue.
The data released by Kick It Out indicates significant rises in other categories of abuse, particularly sexism, transphobia, and faith-based discrimination. Notably, reports of sexism and misogyny spiked by an astonishing 67%. Additionally, there was a marked increase in reports related to youth football, signaling that the issue of discrimination is permeating all levels of the sport.
Calls for Action from Football Authorities
In response to the troubling statistics, Samuel Okafor, chief executive of Kick It Out, emphasized the need for immediate action. He stated, “These figures show that discrimination remains deeply embedded across the game, but the rise in abuse in youth football should be a wake-up call.” Okafor underscored that no individual should face hostility for participating in the sport.
The landscape appears to be shifting, with fans increasingly vocal in demanding accountability for discriminatory behavior. Okafor noted, “What we’re seeing now is that fans aren’t just reporting abuse, they’re demanding action.” He highlighted the growing trend of supporters calling out sexist behavior both online and within stadiums, urging football authorities to address these issues with the same seriousness afforded to other forms of hate.
Online Platforms Under Scrutiny
Despite these developments, Okafor pointed out that online platforms are still falling short in addressing the volume of abuse. He remarked, “The volume of abuse remains high, and too often, those responsible face no consequences.” This lack of accountability poses a challenge for the integrity of the sport and the safety of its participants.
Fans have shown considerable commitment to combating discrimination by voicing their concerns. Now, Okafor insists that it is crucial for football authorities, technology companies, and governments to demonstrate that they are listening and prepared to take decisive action.
As football continues to grapple with these troubling statistics, the hope is that increased awareness and advocacy will lead to meaningful changes within the sport, ensuring a more inclusive and respectful environment for all involved.
