Tragedy Strikes: 11-Year-Old Amberly Barnett Murdered by Neighbour

A tragic incident in Collinsville, Alabama, has left a family shattered after the murder of 11-year-old Amberly Barnett by a neighbour. The young girl was killed by Christopher Madison on March 1, 2019, while her aunt, KC Barnett, briefly left her home unattended. The circumstances surrounding the case have raised significant concerns about child safety and community awareness.
KC Barnett, who had been caring for Amberly and her brother Jayden, 9, following a family emergency, was devastated to discover her niece had gone missing shortly after leaving for errands. Amberly had been living with her aunt since June 2018 after a fire destroyed her mother Jonie’s home. The arrangement was intended to provide stability for the children during a difficult time.
On that fateful day, KC stepped out, leaving Amberly alone in the house. Amberly had expressed a desire for her aunt to stay home and watch television, demonstrating her maturity at nearly twelve years old. KC recalls, “I told her to call my dad if there were any issues.” Tragically, while she was gone, Madison lured Amberly into the woods behind their homes, where he violently took her life.
When KC returned home, she found Amberly missing. After checking with her father and realizing Amberly had not arrived, she called the police. The community joined the search for the girl, with Madison even participating in the effort to locate her. This chilling detail emerged later, as authorities discovered the horrors that had occurred just a short distance away.
The following morning, police dogs located Amberly’s body in the woods, approximately 450 feet from Madison’s residence. Authorities arrested him shortly thereafter. An investigation revealed that Amberly had been strangled, bludgeoned, and burned, prompting charges against Madison for murder and murder occurring during attempted rape. While no evidence of sexual assault was found, the brutality of the crime shocked the community and drew attention to the need for better safeguarding of children.
In the aftermath, KC struggled with overwhelming guilt about leaving Amberly alone. Despite her sister Jonie’s insistence that she did not blame her, KC often felt responsible for the tragedy. KC stated, “I’d let my sister down in the most terrible way imaginable.” The pain was compounded when social services took Jayden into temporary care, a move KC found unnecessary given their familial bond.
The loss of Amberly deeply affected Jonie, who faced a prolonged battle with grief. She was admitted to a psychiatric unit due to her deteriorating mental health. Despite her struggles, she found hope when she discovered she was pregnant again in July 2020. The birth of her daughter, Ava, brought some solace to the family as they attempted to rebuild their lives.
As the legal proceedings against Madison progressed, he pleaded guilty to murder in exchange for a reduced charge. In March 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Circuit Judge Jeremy Taylor stated, “It is justice you will never again breathe the air of the free world.” This resolution offered some closure to KC and Jonie, but the emotional scars remained.
Tragically, the family faced another heart-wrenching loss when Jonie passed away from heart failure on January 13, 2023, at the age of 32. KC believes that her sister succumbed to the overwhelming grief caused by Amberly’s death. “Officially, it was heart failure, but I knew what had killed my sister: it was a broken heart, and it was my fault,” she reflected.
In the wake of these tragedies, KC has dedicated herself to advocating for changes in how authorities handle child abuse investigations. She emphasizes the importance of community awareness and support for families. “I think my purpose must be to warn parents not to make my mistake and to campaign for police to inform the neighbourhood when someone is accused of child abuse,” she stated.
Despite the immense loss, KC continues to cherish the memories of her niece and sister. She finds comfort in spending time with Ava, who embodies the spirit of Amberly and Jonie. “Every summer Ava comes to stay with me. I see Jonie and Amberly’s sweetness and strength in her, and one day we’ll be reunited in heaven,” KC said, holding onto hope amidst the sorrow.
