The best curry house in England has been officially named, with the prestigious title awarded to Sher Khan in Alnwick, Northumberland. This recognition came during the English Curry Awards 2025, which took place in Birmingham this week. The event, now in its 14th year, celebrates outstanding curry houses across the UK, recognizing both small and large establishments for their authentic and flavorful dishes.
Sher Khan stood out among a competitive field to win the Curry Restaurant of the Year prize, also securing the award for the best curry house in the North East region. Reviewers from the local community have praised Sher Khan for its excellent service and quality food. One customer noted, “The best curry we have had in years. Service was excellent and the staff super friendly. I’d totally recommend for great food and a relaxed sophisticated night out. Great value for money.”
The menu at Sher Khan offers a wide variety of Indian classics, with starters priced as low as £3.95 and main courses averaging around £10. In the North West, the top prize went to Aroma Asian Restaurant in Burnley, while Khandan Restaurant in Wellington was honored for Yorkshire and Humber. In the East of England, Spice Valley in Norwich claimed the award, and Everest Lounge in Market Harborough was named the best in the East Midlands.
The West Midlands award was given to Lavang in Solihull, and Spice Route in Andover took the title for the South East. In the South West, the honor went to Mattancherry in Taunton. Major cities also had their standout establishments recognized, with Masala Inn in Bexleyheath named the best in London and Spice n Spirits earning the title in Manchester. Other notable city winners include Sanskrit in Newcastle, Delhi Wala Food in Leeds, Da Mount Gurkha in Liverpool, Prithiraj in Sheffield, Anoki Restaurant in Nottingham, and Padharo Indian Restaurant in Southampton.
The awards highlight the significance of curry houses in British culture, showcasing their ability to bring communities together through shared culinary experiences. As the popularity of curry continues to grow, these awards serve as a testament to the quality and diversity of cuisine available across the country.
