Care Home Cancels Wet T-Shirt Contest Due to Water Restrictions

A care home in Swindon has announced the cancellation of its annual wet T-shirt contest due to a local hosepipe ban imposed in response to ongoing water shortages. The decision has left residents and staff disappointed, as the contest had become a beloved tradition at the Orchard Gardens Care Home.

The event, scheduled for August 13, 2025, featured residents donning T-shirts that would be soaked to the point of transparency, creating a lively and humorous atmosphere. One resident, Margaret Gerving, aged 87, expressed her frustration, stating, “I’m gutted. If we’re running out of water, everyone should just drink more whisky. Never did me any harm.” Gerving had even prepared for the occasion with a new, thin white crop top, which she described as “too racy to wear on a daily basis.”

Highlighting the competitive spirit of the event, Gerving added, “I was really looking forward to popping on my Daisy Dukes and wringing a sponge over my wrinkly double Ds. When you get to my age, you’re grateful for any attention you can get.” As the reigning champion, she emphasized the stakes were high for her, noting, “There’s no guarantee I’ll live to see next year’s contest.”

The hosepipe ban, aimed at conserving water in light of environmental concerns, has prompted numerous community events to be reconsidered. In a humorous twist, care worker Nikki Hollis suggested an alternative event, stating, “T-shirts may be off limits, but we can probably go ahead with a wet trousers contest. It’s not like we can stop the incontinent residents from pissing themselves anyway.”

While the cancellation of the wet T-shirt contest is disappointing for many, it reflects the broader challenge of balancing community activities with responsible water use.
