Liverpool Jeweller Reveals Secrets to Choosing Engagement Rings

In the world of engagement rings, understanding the intricacies of style, quality, and budget is crucial for couples preparing to make a lifelong commitment. Paul Holmes, a jeweller with over 36 years of experience, shares his insights on what to consider when selecting the perfect ring. Operating his own fine jewellery store in Liverpool alongside his wife, Jo Holmes, he has become a trusted figure for many future fiancés.
Choosing the Right Style
When it comes to engagement rings, style is paramount. According to Paul, the most popular shapes are oval, marquise, and emerald cuts. He notes that a staggering 95% of engagement rings sold are diamonds, with the round brilliant cut being particularly sought after. Paul states, “Oval stones make up around 5 out of every 6 diamonds I sell,” underscoring the popularity of this elegant shape.
Understanding your partner’s preferences can also guide your decision. “Predominantly, the other half will come in alone with some ideas, and we will work from those,” Paul explains. Couples often spend significant time together, which can help in identifying whether their partner prefers silver or yellow gold, or whether they have a penchant for wearing numerous pieces of jewellery versus a more classic style.
The 4 C’s of Diamonds
The quality of a diamond is primarily assessed through the ‘four C’s’: cut, clarity, carat, and colour. The cut relates to the diamond’s symmetry and how it interacts with light, while clarity refers to the internal and external characteristics known as inclusions and exclusions. Carat denotes the weight of the diamond, and colour describes the presence of any tint—ideally, a perfect diamond is colorless.
Paul adds an extra C for confidence, assuring customers that all rings come with complimentary servicing. He encourages clients to return for a quality check after the initial three months and then annually. This service includes assessing the stone’s security and providing a thorough cleaning, which is essential considering daily wear and tear.
The question of how much to spend on an engagement ring can often feel daunting. Influenced by social media and high-profile engagements, potential buyers may feel pressured regarding their budget. Paul notes, “Traditionally, the motto was to spend two months’ salary, but now it’s more about what’s comfortable for you and what you can afford.” Ultimately, it’s the sentiment behind the purchase that makes it special. “People love the romance that you’ve gone to buy the ring. They appreciate the gesture of sourcing it themselves,” he adds, highlighting that for many couples, this will be the first significant piece of jewellery in their collection.
As couples navigate the emotional and financial aspects of purchasing an engagement ring, Paul Holmes’ expertise provides a reassuring presence in a complex process. His advice not only helps in selecting the right ring but also emphasizes the importance of personal connection and story in every piece of jewellery.
