Plans for a significant expansion at the Dundonald House Nursing Home in Ayrshire have been officially approved. The South Ayrshire Council granted permission for alterations and the construction of a single-storey extension at the facility located on Old Loans Road. This development aims to improve the living environment for residents by adding up to six new bedrooms.

The application was submitted by Anne Kerr of Dundonald House Nursing Home Ltd, with architectural support from James Harper Architect, based in Lochwinnoch. The proposal outlines a commitment to enhancing care standards through the introduction of single-room accommodations. These improvements will focus on infection prevention and incorporate dementia-friendly design principles.

The approved extension consists of six en-suite bedrooms designed for single occupancy. Each room will feature interlinking doors to facilitate flexibility, allowing for the accommodation of couples when appropriate. Additionally, the design includes patio doors that provide direct access to an external garden area, ensuring that residents enjoy ample natural light and outdoor access.

In addition to the private accommodations, the extension will offer a communal lounge and dining area, complete with a servery. This space is intended to foster a “homely, social environment,” encouraging resident interaction while reducing feelings of isolation and promoting independent living.

The council’s approval, granted under delegated powers, emphasizes that while the alterations will not increase the registered capacity of the care home, they will modernize facilities to better serve current residents. The council documents noted, “Due to the nature, scale, and siting of the proposals, they are considered to have a neutral impact on the character and appearance of the adjacent conservation area and do not compromise the integrity of the mature woodland nearby.”

This development reflects a growing trend among care facilities to enhance living conditions and cater to the evolving needs of residents. The focus on creating a supportive and engaging environment aligns with broader efforts in the healthcare sector to prioritize resident well-being and comfort.
