Construction Underway for 62 Eco-Homes in Brentwood, Essex
Construction has commenced on a significant project to build 62 new eco-homes at Brookfield Close in Brentwood, Essex. This initiative, which began this month, aims to create a modern, sustainable community with zero-carbon homes designed to meet the growing housing needs of the area.
The new development will consist of 46 one- to three-bedroom flats and 16 two- to four-bedroom houses, all of which will meet or exceed national space standards. Notably, the homes will include features that ensure accessibility for wheelchair users and adhere to the Lifetime Homes principles. Previously, the site housed 49 outdated properties, including sheltered bedsits and temporary accommodations. Brentwood Borough Council describes the transformation as a step towards creating “a vibrant, inclusive neighbourhood.”
Sustainable Living and Community Engagement
This project promotes sustainable living through a “fabric-first” approach, integrating ground-source heat pumps, solar panels, and enhanced landscaping to reduce environmental impact. Additionally, the development will feature ample green spaces, including play areas and allotments, to foster community interaction and well-being.
Brentwood Borough Council has highlighted that the initiative will generate jobs and training opportunities through partnerships with contractors. The new homes aim to alleviate fuel poverty and improve health outcomes by enhancing air quality and thermal comfort. Located within walking distance of Shenfield Railway Station, the site is well-positioned for residents seeking access to public transport.
The demolition and preparatory works were completed in spring 2024, paving the way for the construction phase that began this month. The contract for the build has been awarded to the The Hill Group, an award-winning housebuilder known for its commitment to quality and sustainability. The project has also received grant funding through Homes England’s Affordable Housing Programme, ensuring the delivery of high-quality homes for local residents.
Official Statements and Future Prospects
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Tim Barrett, Chair of the Housing, Health and Community Committee at Brentwood Borough Council, expressed the council’s commitment to building “modern, safe, healthy, and green-standard homes.” He stated, “We are investing to positively transform lives for the better for generations to come, and it’s great to have the support of Homes England’s Affordable Housing Programme to help us deliver these homes.”
Shahi Islam, Director of Affordable Housing Grants at Homes England, emphasized the agency’s goal of increasing the supply of quality affordable homes. He noted, “This is a key milestone in the development of Brookfield Close and a prime example of how we work collaboratively with partners to achieve our mission.”
Robert Jack, Regional Director for The Hill Group, highlighted the shared commitment to delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes. He said, “This project represents a shared commitment to delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes that will serve the community for generations.”
The completion of the build is anticipated within two years, marking a significant step towards enhancing the living standards in Brentwood while promoting sustainable development.
