Demonstrators gathered in Mold on August 23, 2023, to protest against plans to establish an asylum seeker dispersal facility at the Ambrose Centre. The proposed facility has sparked significant concern among local residents, particularly regarding the potential housing of families within the community. Counter-demonstrators, advocating for the dispersal facility, were also expected to attend.

North Wales Police acknowledged the planned protest, describing it as a “peaceful demonstration.” They emphasized their commitment to upholding the right to protest while warning that any unlawful actions would be addressed promptly. In a statement on their South Flintshire Facebook page, police noted, “We are aware of plans for a peaceful protest to take place in Mold… Officers are in contact with the organisers and we are working with them, and the community, to ensure the event takes place safely and lawfully with minimum disruption to the wider public.”

Concerns about the facility have been voiced by various community members. The local authority confirmed that the dispersal centre would be operated by Clearsprings Ready Homes, a private company contracted by the Home Office to provide accommodation for asylum seekers across Wales and southern England. This company, led by Graham King, has faced scrutiny, particularly as King was listed among the Sunday Times rich list with an estimated net worth of £750 million.

According to Becky Gittins, the Labour MP for Clwyd East, the Mold facility is designed specifically for families. It is expected to house up to 35 individuals across nine flats, as part of the wider initiative to accommodate asylum seekers in the region.

The proposal has stirred a divided opinion within the market town, where residents express both support and apprehension. As demonstrations unfold, the community remains engaged in discussions about the implications of such a facility on local resources and cohesion.

As the situation develops, further updates will be provided to keep the public informed.
