Firefighters Scale Heights to Honor Late Father and Fundraise
Firefighters from the Scalloway fire crew have taken on an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research in memory of their fallen colleague’s father. On this occasion, eight firefighters climbed a ladder measuring 13.5 metres at the Lerwick station, completing a total of 15 ascents each. This effort equates to the height of Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the UK, which stands at 1,345 metres.
The initiative was inspired by Kieran Fraser, whose father, Kris Fraser, passed away unexpectedly in September 2022. Although Kris did not suffer from a brain tumour, the cause is deeply personal for Kieran, as several family members are battling the disease. “If there was ever a charity that he felt most passionately about, it would have been this charity,” Kieran expressed, highlighting his father’s desire to help others.
The fundraising efforts have already proven successful, with donations exceeding £33,000 to date. This impressive sum has been generated through various events, including a half marathon in May and a Facebook auction, which alone raised over £24,000. Kieran noted the community’s remarkable response, stating, “It’s one of the best things about Shetland, how people come together like this.”
Community Spirit Fuels Fundraising Efforts
The Scalloway fire crew is committed to continuing their fundraising activities until they reach their maximum height, with Area Commander John Kearney stating, “We’ll just keep going until we reach our maximum height.” The firefighters are eager to contribute to this cause, exemplifying the strong community spirit in Shetland.
Kieran also expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support received, saying, “I really appreciate all the effort the boys have put in. It’s brilliant.” The community’s willingness to support charitable causes has been evident, as Kieran pointed out, “You can’t put into words some of the stuff people are willing to do for you.”
As the Scalloway fire crew continues their ascent, they are not only honouring the memory of Kieran’s father but also raising awareness and vital funds for an important cause. Their collective efforts reflect the unity and compassion within the Shetland community, which stands ready to support those in need.
