Students Threaten Boycott as Bill Stalls for Five Years
Students at the University of Montenegro have announced plans for a boycott in response to a legislative proposal that has been pending for five years. The bill, which aims to address critical issues within the education system, is currently undergoing coordination and review by relevant ministries, as outlined by the government’s operational rules.
Prof. Dr. Branka Bošnjak, the advisor to the rector for strategic policies at the University of Montenegro, stated that the students’ announcement does not come as a surprise. She noted that the prolonged process of passing this bill has exceeded acceptable timelines, leading to frustration among the student body.
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the proposal is in the final stages of consultation with all necessary departments. This procedural delay has raised concerns within the academic community, particularly as it impacts student rights and educational reforms.
In recent discussions, students expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of progress on the bill, citing its importance for their academic future. Prof. Bošnjak emphasized the need for timely action from the government to prevent further escalation of student unrest.
As the situation develops, the University of Montenegro community is closely monitoring the response from the Ministry of Education and the Montenegrin Parliament. The students are determined to advocate for their rights and ensure that their voices are heard in the legislative process.
The call for a boycott reflects deeper issues within the educational framework in Montenegro. If the bill continues to stall, it may lead to significant disruptions in academic activities, potentially affecting thousands of students who rely on timely reforms. The government now faces mounting pressure to act decisively and address the concerns raised by students and faculty alike.
