White Birch Aims for Glory in Arc de Triomphe Return
The five-year-old racehorse White Birch is set to compete in the prestigious Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on October 5, 2023, marking his return to a mile and a half for the first time in over two years. Trained by John Joseph Murphy, White Birch recently finished fifth in the Irish Champion Stakes after a summer break, showcasing his potential after a lengthy absence from the track.
Having consistently performed well over ten furlongs in recent years, connections have decided now is the ideal moment to increase his distance. This upcoming race will be significant, as it will be White Birch’s first outing over 12 furlongs since his three-year-old season, where he notably finished third in the Derby.
George Murphy, assistant trainer and son of John Joseph Murphy, expressed satisfaction with White Birch’s last performance. “We were quite happy with how he ran and the ground tightened up quite a bit on the day, but I think he gave a good account of himself having been off the track quite a while,” he stated. Murphy acknowledged the conditions at Leopardstown, noting, “There’s no doubt it was beautiful, safe ground at Leopardstown, just probably not what he’s at his best on.”
Looking ahead, the team is optimistic about their strategy for the Arc. “We’ll aim to go for the Arc now and hopefully we’ll get some softer ground – all being well that is the plan,” Murphy added. His confidence in White Birch’s ability to handle the longer distance is palpable: “I think at this stage of his career going back up to a mile and a half will be no problem for him and we think it will suit.”
As preparations continue, the Murphy team is keen to ensure that White Birch arrives in France ready to compete. “We’re looking forward to it and hoping we can get him there in one piece,” Murphy concluded. “He’s come out of Leopardstown well, and fingers crossed we get to go to France.” The anticipation builds for this highly anticipated return, as White Birch seeks to secure his place among the elite in European horse racing.
