Soundgarden Nears Completion of Final Album Featuring Chris Cornell
Soundgarden is progressing towards the completion of their final album, which will incorporate demo vocals recorded by the late Chris Cornell. The band is currently about 70% finished with the project, which draws from tracks written in 2015 and 2016. Cornell recorded vocals for these demos prior to his death in 2017.
Drummer Matt Cameron, bassist Ben Shepherd, and guitarist Kim Thayil are using Cornell’s vocal tracks as a foundation for the new music. Cameron described the process as both “amazing and bittersweet” during an interview with Lyndsey Parker on her show, Lyndsanity!
Bittersweet Journey to the Final Album
Cameron emphasized that the band is dedicated to finishing the album but has not yet set a release date. He stated, “We are working hard to complete that album. It sounds killer, and we’re really excited to finish it.” The creative process involves building new tracks around Cornell’s previously recorded vocal parts, allowing his voice to guide the band’s musical direction.
Reflecting on the emotional aspect of revisiting Cornell’s voice, Cameron noted, “It’s been tough to solo up that voice and hear him loud and clear.” He expressed optimism that fans will appreciate the finished product, which he believes will serve as a fitting conclusion to Soundgarden’s musical journey.
Legacy and Future of Soundgarden
The band’s new album marks a significant moment in their history, as it will be their seventh and final studio release. The songs, originally crafted during collaborative songwriting sessions in 2015 and 2016, were further developed during rehearsal sessions in early 2017 before the band went on tour.
As Soundgarden approaches the completion of this heartfelt project, the band members remain focused on producing music that resonates with both their legacy and their fans. This final album not only encapsulates the band’s artistic journey but also serves as a tribute to Cornell’s lasting impact on their music and the broader rock landscape.
Earlier this year, Cameron announced his departure from Pearl Jam after a remarkable 27 years with the band. His commitment to Soundgarden’s final project underscores his dedication to both his musical roots and the fans who have supported them throughout the years.
