Market Drayton Town sits in a precarious position, currently ranked third-bottom in the First Division South with just eight points from ten matches. Despite this challenging start to the season, manager Scott Dawson remains optimistic about the team’s ability to recover and push for a play-off spot.

Last Friday, the team played an exhilarating 3-3 draw against ten-man Shawbury United in a gripping Shropshire derby, attended by 224 fans at Greenfields. The match showcased a range of emotions, with both teams trading goals in a thrilling encounter. New Shawbury recruit Jamie King made a significant impact, scoring a hat-trick, while Sam Preece, a fresh addition from Bridgnorth Spartans, and Harry Minshall each found the net for Market Drayton.

Dawson reflected on the match, acknowledging that despite the disappointment of not securing a win, there were many positive aspects to take from the performance. “It probably feels like two points lost given the chances at the end to win,” Dawson said. “There were loads of positives from Sandbach before; we played differently and let them have the ball. They scored twice from set-pieces which could have been a handball and a foul, but it was a really good performance.”

The match against Shawbury began with King putting the visitors ahead with a stunning long-range strike. Market Drayton responded well, with Preece and Minshall scoring to take a 2-1 lead. Following a red card for Shawbury’s Marc Stallard, the home side appeared to be in control. However, King’s impressive free-kick equalized the match, demonstrating his prowess throughout the game.

Looking ahead, Dawson emphasized the need for his team to become more ruthless in their approach. “Our aim at the start was to get into the play-offs. If you crunch the numbers, if we win 60 or 65 percent of our remaining games, we will get in the play-offs. I think that’s very doable, but we’ve got to start being more ruthless as individuals.” He also highlighted the importance of tightening up on set-pieces, an area that has seen the team concede crucial goals.

As the team prepares for their next challenge, they will face a tricky away fixture against Eccleshall in the Marcon League Cup. Market Drayton Town is set to welcome back former Ball Hay Green forward Brad Wilson from injury, which could bolster their attacking options. Additionally, the signing of former Whitchurch Alport midfielder Dylan Bath adds depth to the squad as they aim to turn their fortunes around.

Dawson’s confidence, coupled with the potential impact of new signings, keeps the hope alive for Market Drayton Town as they strive to climb the league table and regain their form.
