Researchers Unveil Revolutionary ‘Bone Glue’ for Rapid Fracture Healing

A team of researchers in China has developed a groundbreaking bio-adhesive known as **Bone-02**, which can repair fractures in as little as **three minutes**. This innovative material, inspired by the adhesive properties of oysters, offers a natural and biodegradable alternative to traditional metal plates and screws, potentially transforming the landscape of orthopaedic medicine.

The creation of Bone-02 stems from nearly a decade of research conducted at **Zhejiang University School of Medicine** and **Xiaoshan Hospital**. According to **Professor Pan Xunwu**, the lead investigator, traditional methods of fracture repair often result in complications such as the loss of bone fragments and delayed recovery. He stated, “In the process, bone fragments were often lost, reducing bone mass and ultimately negatively impacting patients’ quality of life.”

Bone-02 has been designed to bond bone fragments even in blood-rich environments, addressing a significant challenge in fracture treatment. After extensive experimentation, including hundreds of formulation changes and various animal trials, the research team successfully produced an adhesive that balances biocompatibility with high adhesive strength.

Advantages Over Traditional Methods

Unlike conventional metal implants, which typically require a second surgery for removal, Bone-02 is fully biodegradable and is absorbed by the body within six months. This characteristic eliminates the need for follow-up procedures, significantly reducing the risk of infection and adverse reactions to foreign materials.

In clinical trials involving over **150 patients**, Bone-02 demonstrated impressive results. For instance, a patient with a comminuted wrist fracture had their bone fragments fixed in just three minutes through a small incision measuring **2–3 cm**. In contrast, standard treatments would necessitate a larger incision and a subsequent removal surgery a year later. After three months, the patient achieved complete restoration of wrist function without complications.

The adhesive’s mechanical properties are equally compelling. It boasts a tensile strength capable of withstanding over **181 kg**, a compressive strength of approximately **10 MPa**, and a shear strength around **0.5 MPa**. These metrics suggest that Bone-02 could rival or even replace existing solutions such as steel plates and screws.

Future Prospects

**Lin Xianfeng**, an associate chief orthopaedic surgeon at **Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital** and co-lead researcher, expressed optimism about the potential impact of Bone-02 on fracture treatment. The adhesive’s rapid bonding capabilities and ease of use could not only shorten surgery times but also minimize intraoperative damage.

The challenges of developing effective bone adhesives have persisted for decades, with prior attempts using gelatin, epoxy resins, and acrylates failing due to inadequate biocompatibility and strength. Bone-02 is currently undergoing multi-centre randomized controlled clinical trials, which are the gold standard for obtaining regulatory approval.

Medical experts are cautiously optimistic regarding the future availability of Bone-02. While the early evidence is promising, they emphasize the need for peer-reviewed studies and adherence to international safety standards before it can be widely implemented in hospitals. Should these trials prove successful, Bone-02 could become available globally within the next few years, offering millions of patients a faster and safer recovery path from fractures.
