Texas Pastor Robert Morris Admits to Child Sex Abuse, Sentenced

A former Texas pastor and influential megachurch leader, Robert Morris, has pleaded guilty to charges of child sexual abuse dating back over four decades. Morris, 64, the founder of Gateway Church, admitted in court on Thursday to committing lewd or indecent acts with a child, stemming from his abuse of Cindy Clemishere when she was just 12 years old in 1982. The abuse reportedly lasted for four years while Morris was staying with Clemishere’s family in Hominy, Oklahoma.

In a poignant statement to Morris during the court proceedings, Clemishere expressed the profound impact of his actions, saying, “His abuse had rippled into every part of her life.” She emphasized her status as a child at the time, asserting, “We were never in an ‘inappropriate relationship.’ I was not a ‘young lady’ but a child.”

Under a plea deal, Morris has been sentenced to ten years, though he will serve only six months in jail, followed by probation. He is also required to register as a sex offender and pay $250,000 (approximately £184,831) in restitution, as confirmed by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office.

Founded by Morris in 2000, Gateway Church grew to accommodate over 100,000 active attendees across nine campuses in Texas. Morris previously served on former President Donald Trump‘s evangelical advisory committee in 2016, but he stepped down in 2024 following the public revelation of Clemishere’s allegations.

Clemishere’s courage to come forward has sparked discussions about accountability within faith communities. One social media user remarked on her bravery, stating, “So proud of Cindy today and every day! Church, be better.”

An Ongoing Pattern of Abuse in Religious Leadership

Morris’ case is unfortunately not an isolated incident. The history of religious leadership includes numerous examples of individuals who exploited their positions for abusive purposes. Notable cases include Warren Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who is serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting underage girls. Jeffs had 78 wives at the time of his arrest in 2006, including 24 minors, and was convicted of child sexual assault in Texas in 2011.

Across the globe, Shoko Asahara, the cult leader of Aum Shinrikyo in Japan, orchestrated the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995, resulting in the deaths of 13 people. Asahara’s actions stemmed from a desire to divert attention from his cult’s criminal activities. He was executed for his crimes in 2018.

In New Zealand, Graham Capill, former leader of the Christian Heritage Party, was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2005 for sexually assaulting multiple girls under the age of 12. His actions shocked the conservative Christian community that once accepted him as a preacher of family values.

Another significant case is that of Paul Schäfer, the founder of Colonia Dignidad in Chile. His secretive community was a cover for systemic child sexual abuse during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Convicted in 2006 for the abuse of 25 children, Schäfer received a 20-year sentence and died in prison in 2010.

The cases of Morris, Jeffs, and Schäfer highlight the dangers of unchecked spiritual authority, which can create environments ripe for exploitation.
