Two Claire’s Accessories stores in Coventry are set to close permanently, following a recent decision by administrators. As part of a broader restructuring effort, sales began over the weekend, with discounts of up to 20 percent on items at the two locations.

The closures are part of a larger plan that will see a total of 145 branches across the UK, Ireland, and the Channel Islands shut down. Among the affected locations are the Claire’s stores at West Orchards Shopping Centre and Broadgate House, which will cease operations by mid-November 2023. While the exact closure dates have yet to be announced, the impact on staff remains uncertain.

Significant Restructuring Efforts

Despite these closures, administrators have agreed to sell 156 stores to the investment group Modella Capital, which aims to preserve approximately 1,000 jobs. This acquisition follows Claire’s filing for bankruptcy in the United States, citing a decline in foot traffic to physical retail locations as a significant challenge. The majority of Claire’s UK assets have now been acquired by Modella, which previously purchased WHSmith outlets and rebranded them as TGJones earlier this year.

According to Natasha Harbinson, Managing Director at Interpath, “We are pleased to confirm a sale of the majority of Claire’s UK business and assets, which will ensure this popular brand will continue to trade on high streets up and down the UK.” This transition is designed to maintain some level of presence for the brand, despite the closure of many stores.

Future of Claire’s in Coventry

At the time of reporting, the Claire’s store at Arena Shopping Park in Coventry remains open and is not affected by the closures. The situation reflects ongoing challenges faced by physical retailers, particularly in adapting to changing consumer habits in an increasingly digital marketplace.

As the landscape of retail continues to shift, the fate of Claire’s in Coventry serves as a reminder of the broader trends impacting shopping habits across the UK and beyond. Further updates regarding the closure dates and staff impacts are expected as the situation develops.
