Hampshire County Council Secures £52 Million for Enhanced Bus Services
Hampshire County Council has successfully secured over £52 million in government funding aimed at enhancing bus services throughout the region. This substantial investment comprises £27.2 million in capital funding and £24.9 million in revenue support from the Department for Transport (DfT). The funds will be distributed over four years, commencing in the 2026/27 financial year, and are set to significantly improve public transport options for residents.
The financial boost is designed to encourage greater bus usage and improve service quality across the county. Specific plans include the introduction of new bus priority lanes, increased service frequency on heavily trafficked routes, enhanced facilities at sixth form colleges, and improved real-time passenger information systems. Additionally, funding will be allocated for rural bus shelters and community transport initiatives, aiming to cater to a wider audience.
Strategic Objectives and Community Impact
This funding initiative is part of the Government’s Local Authority Bus Grant program, which aims to assist councils in both maintaining and enhancing local bus services. The announcement of this financial support follows a noticeable increase in bus ridership in Hampshire. Data from the DfT indicates that passenger journeys have escalated from 24.9 million in the 2023/24 period to 26.6 million in 2024/25, representing an increase of 1.7 million trips.
Councillor Lulu Bowerman, the council’s cabinet member for highways and passenger transport, expressed optimism regarding the funding. She stated that it would empower the council to confidently plan improvements in collaboration with bus operators and the community. “This funding means we can plan ahead and invest in services that are more frequent, cleaner, and more reliable, bringing real benefits for residents,” she noted.
Councillor Bowerman emphasized that improved bus services would promote greener travel choices, reduce congestion, and contribute to addressing climate change. She highlighted the broader community advantages of increased bus usage, stating, “The more people who use the bus network, the better it becomes for everyone. It strengthens our local economy, enables young people to reach education, training, and jobs, and gives older residents more opportunities to stay independent and connected to their community.”
Future Developments in Public Transport
As Hampshire County Council prepares to implement these changes, the focus remains on fostering a more robust public transport system that meets the needs of all residents. The funding not only reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing local bus services but also signals a proactive approach to addressing the evolving demands of public transport users.
Overall, this significant investment is expected to yield lasting benefits for Hampshire, making public transport a more viable option for many and supporting the region’s economic and environmental objectives. As the council moves forward with its plans, the emphasis will remain on creating a sustainable and efficient bus network that can adapt to the needs of the community.
