Housing Executive Seeks Nominations for Unsung Heroes in Rural Communities
The Housing Executive of Northern Ireland is calling for nominations for the Rural Community Awards, aimed at recognizing individuals and groups who make significant contributions to their rural communities. Nominations are open until February 27, 2024, with successful applicants eligible for awards of up to £1,000 to support their initiatives.
Celebrating Grassroots Contributions
The awards serve to highlight the important work carried out by volunteers and community groups across rural areas, showcasing their efforts to enhance local life. This initiative not only honors the contributions of these individuals but also supports the ongoing vibrancy of Northern Ireland’s rural regions.
Last year’s recipient of the Community Champion Award, Patricia McConnell, co-founder of the Carnlough Community Association, expressed her gratitude for the recognition. At 82 years old, she has dedicated herself to improving community life in her village. “It was so lovely to be recognized by the Housing Executive for the effort we put in to improving life for everyone living in our beautiful village,” she remarked.
Under her leadership, the association has introduced various new programs focused on mental health and well-being for ages 30 to 60, a demographic often overlooked. Initiatives include yoga, reflexology, food hygiene, and first aid classes, along with established programs like the luncheon club and youth club.
Categories of Recognition
The Rural Community Awards, which first launched in 2014, offer three categories:
- Community Champion Award: Recognizes outstanding individuals nominated by their community groups. The winning group receives £500, along with a prize for the individual.
- Rural Community Spirit Award: Open to community groups that work collaboratively to enhance their local area, with the winning group receiving £1,000.
- Cleaner and Greener Rural Community Award: Sponsored by the NI Housing Council, this award acknowledges communities that promote sustainability and environmental enhancement, with a prize of £1,000.
McConnell encouraged local groups to apply, emphasizing the awards as a great way to elevate the profile of grassroots efforts. “I would strongly encourage groups to apply for the Rural Community Awards. They are a wonderful way to celebrate the work of and raise the profile of small rural groups making a huge difference,” she stated.
To nominate an individual or group, visit the Housing Executive’s official website at www.nihe.gov.uk and search for the Rural Community Awards or email [email protected] for an application form. All completed nominations must be submitted by 4 PM on February 27, 2024.
This initiative underscores the vital role played by volunteers in fostering strong community ties and enhancing the quality of life in Northern Ireland’s rural areas.
