Sutton Coldfield Restaurants Seek Expansion Amid Financial Pressures

Two neighbouring restaurants in Sutton Coldfield, the Sher Indian Grill and the Himalayan Grill, have submitted simultaneous planning applications to expand their dining areas. This move comes as both establishments seek to accommodate more customers and address rising financial pressures.

Plans for Expansion

The Himalayan Grill, which specializes in Nepalese and Indian cuisine, intends to replace its temporary timber-covered outdoor seating with a permanent extension. This new structure will feature aluminium framing, a flat roof, and double-glazed windows. The expansion will nearly double the venue’s capacity from 34 customers to 66, despite only increasing the gross internal area from 143 square metres to 158 square metres.

Mr. Puskar Silwal, the owner of the Himalayan Grill, emphasized the necessity of this expansion to enhance profitability and assist with operational costs. He noted that previous attempts to run the restaurant had failed, partly due to financial constraints. “We need to expand to help pay the business rates, workers’ wages, and increased insurance payments,” he stated.

The application for the Himalayan Grill is open for public comment until January 26, 2025, and is registered under application number 2025/04836/PA.

Sher Indian Grill’s Development

Next door, the Sher Indian Grill, previously known as Tapri, is seeking to build a conservatory extension at the rear of its premises. This Indian food and sports bar establishment aims to add approximately 110 square metres of floor space, which would allow for an additional 56 seats.

The new conservatory will result in the loss of one parking space, but the owners appear confident that the expansion will aid in attracting more patrons. The public comment period for the Sher Indian Grill application, numbered 2025/05660/PA, has a confusing deadline noted as December 2, 2025, which predates the registration date. Nonetheless, comments are still being accepted.

Both restaurants are located on Manor Road, close to the Bottle of Sack Wetherspoon’s, in a bustling area of Sutton Coldfield. As they navigate the challenges of the restaurant industry, these expansions could mark a pivotal moment in their operations, potentially securing their futures amidst increasing competition and operational costs.
