Croydon Youth Club Fuels Future Rappers with DJ AG’s Support
The Legacy Youth Zone in Croydon is nurturing the next generation of rappers with the assistance of social media sensation DJ AG and newly appointed Music Ambassador DJ Semtex. On February 21, 2024, they visited the youth club, which provides a safe space for young people to develop their skills in music production and performance.
Croydon has a rich musical heritage, often highlighted by the success of artists such as Olivia Dean and RAYE. However, the Legacy Youth Zone is quietly becoming a vital hub for young talent in the area. Each week, aspiring rappers and producers aged eight to 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs, gather to write lyrics, produce beats, and record tracks in a well-equipped music studio.
Empowering Young Talent
During his visit, DJ AG expressed admiration for the talent displayed by the young artists. “The talent is amazing, but more importantly, I love how respectful they are,” he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service. AG emphasized the importance of fostering a respectful environment, stating, “A lot of that is missing in society today.” His commitment to the youth club reflects a desire to see these young individuals succeed, saying, “If I lived in Croydon or the surrounding areas, I would be sending my kids here.”
DJ Semtex, a long-time advocate for UK hip hop and host of a show on Capital Xtra, echoed AG’s sentiments. Recently appointed as Legacy’s official Music Ambassador with support from Sony Music UK’s Social Justice Fund, Semtex believes that the youth club is a critical platform for future stars. “100 per cent, the next generation of stars are already in the room,” he stated. “The starting point is giving them the education and getting them on the platforms.”
A Growing Community of Creatives
The Legacy Youth Zone not only provides opportunities for musical growth but also serves as a community hub. Young people like Kyran, 17, view the club as a positive refuge. “When I’m bored, instead of going outside, doing foolishness or going to a party, I come here,” he said. “It gives me a breath of fresh air.” For Lee, 14, the club fosters connections, helping young people make new friends while exploring their creativity.
Legacy’s Chief Executive, Myke Catterall, highlighted the necessity of such facilities in Croydon, especially after the council’s youth services were cut. “We know there’s a need,” he remarked. “We see stats around poverty, food poverty, and serious youth violence. What we know is that we are a safe space for young people.” Catterall’s comments underscore the club’s role in providing universal services and support to vulnerable youth.
Both AG and Semtex have previously witnessed the artistic potential of Croydon in outdoor sessions showcasing local talent. AG humorously noted the unique vibe of the area, saying, “I don’t know what’s in the water in Croydon, but it’s obviously good.” Semtex praised the storytelling ability of young rappers, pointing to the recent release of a track, “Adam and Ryan,” by Legacy graduate MK, which he described as “incredible storytelling that’s on par with the greatest storytellers in hip hop.”
As the Legacy Youth Zone continues to empower young artists, it stands as a testament to the potential of community-driven initiatives in fostering creativity and connection among the youth. With the support of influential figures like DJ AG and DJ Semtex, the future of Croydon’s music scene looks promising.
