Gorka Marquez Steps Back from Strictly Amid Controversies
Gorka Marquez, a professional dancer known for his participation in the popular television show Strictly Come Dancing, has announced that he will take a step back from this year’s series due to a series of controversies surrounding the programme. Marquez, 34, will be absent for three weeks as he takes on a judging role in the Spanish version of the show, Bailando Con Las Estrellas.
During his time away, Marquez will not be paired with a professional partner, instead contributing as part of the ensemble cast for the initial seven weeks. Following this, he will be absent for a month before rejoining the production in week 11. Sources close to the dancer indicate that he is feeling relieved about his reduced presence on the show, particularly given the ongoing controversies that have emerged recently.
Controversies Surrounding Strictly Come Dancing
The current season of Strictly Come Dancing has been marred by allegations of toxic behaviour among cast members. According to reports from The Sun, Marquez has expressed pride in being one of the longest-serving professional dancers on the show but is glad to be stepping back during this tumultuous time. He reportedly stated, “Gorka loves Strictly and is excited to be part of the group dances, but this is the third series facing serious allegations concerning bullying and inappropriate behaviour.”
The latest controversy includes the arrest of a male participant on suspicion of rape and non-consensual intimate image abuse. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and they are providing support to the alleged victim. A spokesperson from the police stated, “On Friday, August 22, officers arrested a man on suspicion of rape and non-consensual intimate image abuse.”
While the BBC has insisted that these allegations do not involve anyone from the current cast, the climate surrounding the show remains tense. The broadcaster has stated that it is committed to maintaining the integrity of the show and will continue with the production as planned.
Previous Allegations and Ongoing Investigations
The series has faced multiple accusations of misconduct in recent years. In the previous season, contestant Wynne Evans was involved in a scandal after being accused of inappropriate behaviour during a press event, which resulted in him being dismissed from the show. In addition, former contestant Amanda Abbington raised concerns about bullying and harassment after her experiences with fellow dancer Giovanni Pernice.
Allegations of drug use have also surfaced, leading to an inquiry into two unnamed stars after claims emerged regarding cocaine use on set. A source revealed that the BBC is taking these allegations seriously and has hired a law firm to investigate. The BBC’s spokesperson reiterated their commitment to addressing serious complaints and ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
As the new series of Strictly Come Dancing approaches its premiere, the leadership is reportedly considering implementing random drug testing during the upcoming tour to ensure compliance with their policies.
With Gorka Marquez stepping back during this challenging period, fans and industry observers will be watching closely to see how the show navigates these controversies and maintains its reputation in the entertainment landscape.
