Unlocking the Benefits of Gua Sha: Expert Insights and Techniques
The gua sha tool has emerged as a prominent fixture in skincare routines, particularly among celebrities. This facial massaging tool claims to enhance the appearance of cheekbones and provide a radiant complexion with minimal effort. Yet, while social media often portrays it as a miraculous solution, experts caution that the benefits of gua sha are more nuanced, emphasizing the importance of technique.
Understanding Gua Sha’s Benefits
According to Dr. Susan Mayou, a consultant dermatologist at the Cadogan Clinic, the primary advantages of facial gua sha include improved lymphatic drainage, temporary reduction in puffiness, and enhanced blood circulation. The gentle scraping motion encourages lymphatic fluid movement, which can alleviate facial swelling and create a more sculpted appearance in the short term. Increased blood flow can also impart a healthier glow to the skin.
Facialist Izabela Pawlitka from skincare company Dr. David Jack elaborates that gua sha primarily works by stimulating microcirculation, which increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the skin, leading to a more vibrant complexion. However, both experts emphasize that expectations should remain realistic.
“There is limited high-quality clinical evidence to show that gua sha produces long-term structural changes in the skin such as increased collagen or permanent lifting,” Dr. Mayou notes. Most benefits observed are short-lived and cosmetic in nature.
Preparation and Technique
Proper skin preparation is crucial for effective gua sha application. Experts agree that the skin must be well-lubricated before using the tool. “The skin should always be well-lubricated before gua sha,” advises Dr. Mayou. This step is vital to prevent dragging or micro-trauma. A generous application of facial oil, serum, or moisturizer is recommended to allow the tool to glide smoothly over the skin.
Pawlitka adds that the choice of product is flexible, stating, “It doesn’t have to be a facial oil – a serum or moisturizer works just as well. The important thing is that the skin isn’t being pulled.” It is also essential to cleanse the tool thoroughly before use and avoid application over broken skin, active acne, or inflamed areas. Those using strong retinoids or exfoliating acids should pause for a few days before using gua sha, and a waiting period of at least two weeks is advisable after injectable treatments such as Botox or fillers.
When applying the tool, the pressure should be light to moderate. “The pressure should be enough to move the skin slightly, but never enough to cause pain or deep redness,” Dr. Mayou explains. The tool should be held at a near-flat angle against the face, moved outwards and upwards in line with the natural contours. Pawlitka suggests a 45-degree angle while stressing the importance of gliding, not scraping.
“Use medium pressure – it should feel relaxing but not painful – and always glide in upward and outward strokes,” she advises. Gua sha should not leave bruises; Dr. Mayou asserts that facial gua sha should not result in marks, unlike traditional body gua sha, where bruising may occur.
Individuals are encouraged to repeat each movement five to ten times on each side of the face for optimal results.
Frequency and Tool Selection
Most skincare experts recommend using gua sha three to five times a week to experience benefits such as reduced puffiness and improved skin appearance. Dr. Mayou states, “Five to ten minutes is more than adequate to achieve lymphatic drainage and circulation benefits.” Overuse or extended sessions may lead to skin irritation without enhancing results.
Pawlitka is cautious about daily use, stating, “I’m not a fan of daily use as it can overstimulate the skin, leading to irritation, redness, or inflammation.” She recommends a usage frequency of two to three times a week.
The material of the gua sha tool, whether jade, rose quartz, or stainless steel, has minimal impact on the outcome, according to experts. “In terms of skin physiology, the material of the tool makes very little difference to the biological effect,” Dr. Mayou explains. The benefits arise primarily from the massage technique rather than the stone itself.
While jade and rose quartz are often associated with cooling properties, stainless steel is durable, non-porous, and easy to clean. Pawlitka notes that stainless steel can also be more easily chilled or warmed for temperature-based effects.
In summary, while gua sha may not provide permanent lifting, when used correctly, it can deliver a temporary glow, reduced puffiness, and a moment of relaxation. As long as the technique is gentle and consistent, individuals can enjoy the potential cosmetic benefits of this popular facial tool.
