Barnstaple Father Turns Cancer Journey into Underwear Campaign
A father from Barnstaple, England, has turned a life-changing cancer diagnosis into a campaign for men’s health awareness, inspired by television personality Jeremy Clarkson. Andy Hood, aged 53, credits Clarkson’s advice on self-examination during an episode of The Grand Tour with prompting him to check his own health.
After experiencing increased nocturnal urination, Hood decided to investigate further. Following a visit to his general practitioner, he received a diagnosis of testicular cancer, which he has since overcome. This personal experience led him to create a line of underwear called Check Ya Balls, designed to encourage men to perform regular self-examinations and raise awareness about testicular cancer.
Hood expressed deep gratitude for Clarkson’s influence, stating, “I will never be able to thank Clarkson, Hammond, and May enough for saving my life that day. Without watching that programme, I would not have checked myself.” He underscored the importance of self-awareness, warning that had he not taken action, his condition could have worsened.
From Diagnosis to Mission
The journey began after Hood discovered a lump in his testicle while showering shortly after watching Clarkson discuss testicular cancer. He underwent surgery to remove one of his testicles and completed a course of chemotherapy as part of his treatment. Now, as a resilient businessman and father of three, he has channeled his experience into a mission to help other men confront their health.
His underwear line features playful cartoon designs and serves as both a humorous prompt and an essential health message. In its first month, over 150 pairs of Check Ya Balls underwear have been sold, with 60 percent of proceeds donated to the Robin Cancer Trust and Cahonas charities.
Hood explained, “I decided to turn something rubbish into something powerful— a mission to get men talking, opening up, and most importantly… giving the boys a regular check.” He aims for every man to own at least one pair, emphasizing that this simple act could save lives.
Raising Awareness and Encouraging Action
Testicular cancer typically affects one testicle, but both can be impacted. According to the NHS, symptoms may include lumps or swelling in the testicle, discomfort in the scrotum, or a heavy sensation. Hood’s initiative aims to inform men about these signs while promoting the importance of regular self-examination.
As part of his campaign, Hood shares personal stories and health tips, aiming to break the stigma surrounding men’s health discussions. He recently received a message on Christmas Eve from an individual who had been inspired to check for symptoms after seeing Hood’s content on testicular cancer awareness.
The initiative has gained traction, and Hood remains optimistic about its impact. He believes that with humour and openness, more men will take the necessary steps to prioritize their health. “Without their message, I would never have known,” he stated, highlighting the critical role that awareness plays in early detection and successful treatment of the disease.
Through Check Ya Balls, Andy Hood not only honours the influence of Jeremy Clarkson but also champions a vital cause—encouraging men to take charge of their health for a brighter, healthier future.
