Belfast Mum Celebrates 10 Years Cancer-Free at Pink Run

This October, Cancer Focus NI commemorates the tenth anniversary of its flagship Pink Run. Among the participants is Debra Rice, a Belfast mother celebrating a personal milestone—ten years cancer-free. Reflecting on her journey, Debra recalls the devastating moment in September 2015 when she received the diagnosis that would change her life: “You have breast cancer.” At that time, her daughter Emma was just seven years old, and all Debra could think about was the possibility of missing significant moments in her child’s life.

“I wished more than anything I would make it to see her go to secondary school,” Debra shared. “I wasn’t thinking beyond that.” Now, as she prepares to run alongside Emma, who is currently studying for her A-levels, the event symbolizes triumph, survival, and hope.

Confronting a Harsh Reality

Debra had been proactive about her health, attending a family history clinic at Belfast City Hospital for nearly a decade due to her strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer. After a routine check-up led to additional tests—including an ultrasound and biopsy—she faced the unthinkable. “It was totally out of the blue, an absolute shock,” she recalled. “I hadn’t felt any lumps or bumps, and I was feeling fine.” Fortunately, her oncologist informed her that the cancer had been detected early, revealing a small 18mm tumor.

Further examinations identified that Debra carried the BRCA1 gene fault, a genetic mutation associated with elevated risks for breast and ovarian cancer. She was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form often linked to BRCA1 mutations. Faced with her diagnosis, Debra made the difficult choice to undergo a double mastectomy and hysterectomy. “It was a no-brainer for me,” she emphasized. “I wanted the best chance of survival.”

The Challenge of Recovery

Despite her determination, Debra described the treatment journey as extremely challenging, particularly the experience of chemotherapy. “Losing my hair was one of the biggest hurdles. Just three weeks after my first cycle, it started coming out in clumps. That’s when I really cried.” Support from Cancer Focus NI proved crucial during these trying times. “They provide counselling, support groups, and practical help when you really need it. After my surgery, I met with one of their bra fitting specialists. It was amazing to be with someone who understood what I was going through. That was invaluable.”

Debra noted that the emotional toll of cancer often lingers long after treatment ends. “It takes a long time to feel like you can take a breath. Even around year six or seven, I felt the most anxious. Without regular checks, every little pain makes you wonder if the cancer is back.” Now, at the ten-year milestone, Debra finally feels a sense of peace as she prepares for the Pink Run.

This year’s Pink Run carries special significance, not only for Debra but for Cancer Focus NI, as it highlights a decade of efforts to raise awareness and support for women affected by breast cancer. Every year in Northern Ireland, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The charity’s “Go Pink” campaign aims to raise funds for essential services, including counselling, family support, and specialist fittings for bras and swimwear.

“Getting to the ten-year mark feels like such a triumph,” Debra reflected. “Looking back at the last Pink Run, Emma was still so young, and everything felt so uncertain. Now, I’m excited to run with my family and other women who’ve been touched by breast cancer. It’s going to be a special day—and I can’t wait.”
