Black Midi Guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin Passes at 26
Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, the talented guitarist of the London-based rock band Black Midi, has passed away at the age of 26 after a prolonged struggle with mental health issues. The news was confirmed by the band’s record label, Rough Trade Records, which expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the musician.
Kwasniewski-Kelvin, a founding member of Black Midi, played a vital role in the band’s rise since its inception in 2017. The group gained initial recognition by performing in local venues such as the Windmill in Brixton, where they caught the attention of industry professionals. Alongside fellow members Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, and Morgan Simpson, Kwasniewski-Kelvin helped shape the band’s distinctive sound.
In 2019, Black Midi released their debut studio album, ‘Schlagenheim’, produced by Dan Carey. The album received critical acclaim, featuring notable singles such as ‘Bmbmbm’, ‘Speedway’, and ‘Ducter’. It was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize and made its mark on the UK Top 50 Albums chart.
Mental Health Struggles and Departure from the Band
Kwasniewski-Kelvin stepped back from performing in January 2021 due to mental health challenges. In a statement at that time, he shared, “I’ve been taking some time off from the band as I have been mentally unwell. Because of this, I haven’t featured on forthcoming material. I’ll be back soon.” The remaining members of Black Midi expressed their support, emphasizing their commitment to his recovery and respecting his privacy.
Following his departure, Black Midi continued to create music with the addition of a saxophonist and various session musicians. They released two more albums, ‘Cavalcade’ in 2021 and ‘Hellfire’ in 2022, before announcing an indefinite hiatus in August 2024 to focus on personal projects.
Rough Trade Records shared their condolences on social media, stating: “It is with deep sadness that we, as a family, regret to inform you that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health. A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed; despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old. He will always be loved.” They encouraged everyone to check in with their loved ones to prevent similar tragedies.
Kwasniewski-Kelvin’s contributions to Black Midi and the wider music community will be remembered fondly by fans and peers alike. His legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support within the arts and beyond.
