Family Mourns Loss of Beloved Cyclist Robert Sansom in Crash
A family is in mourning following the tragic death of Robert Sansom, an 80-year-old cyclist, who died after a collision in Cambridgeshire on August 7, 2023. Sansom, affectionately known as Bob, was involved in a crash with a white Skoda Karoq while cycling on Childerley Drive.
In a heartfelt tribute, his family described him as a “much-loved dad, grandad, brother, uncle, and friend” who had a lifelong passion for cycling. They emphasized his love for activities such as walking, gliding, beekeeping, volunteering, and travelling, stating, “He will be deeply missed by many.”
Emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 21:15. Sadly, Sansom was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Skoda Karoq, a man in his 30s from Newmarket, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on bail and is scheduled to return to Parkside police station on November 7.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the circumstances surrounding the collision to come forward. This includes anyone with dashcam footage from the area at the time of the crash. Individuals with information can report it via the police force’s website, quoting reference Op Whetstone, or by calling 101.
The community is rallying around Sansom’s family during this difficult time, as they navigate their loss and seek answers regarding the tragic event.
