Keswick Urgent Treatment Centre to Close for Weekend
The Keswick Community Hospital will close its Urgent Treatment Centre this weekend due to ongoing staffing issues. The North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust announced that the facility will cease operations at 16:30 on February 20, 2025, and will remain closed on February 21 and February 22, reopening at 08:30 on February 23.
The Urgent Treatment Centre in Keswick usually operates from 08:30 to 18:00 daily. This closure marks the continuation of disruptions that began in August 2024, when the centre reduced its hours due to staff sickness and vacancies. At that time, the trust indicated that these changes were temporary, yet the situation appears to have persisted.
Service Availability and Alternatives
Urgent Treatment Centres, introduced in 2017, serve to provide immediate medical attention for non-life-threatening conditions. Patients can book appointments through NHS 111 and receive care for a variety of common injuries and illnesses typically seen in Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments.
While Keswick’s centre will not operate this weekend, the Urgent Treatment Centre in Penrith remains available, functioning from 08:00 to 22:00 daily. The trust reassured the public that A&E departments at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven continue to provide full services. These facilities prioritize the most critical cases, ensuring that patients with less severe conditions can still seek timely treatment at Urgent Treatment Centres.
No specific reasons were provided for the weekend closure, but it follows several other instances in 2025 and at least one earlier this year, attributed to staffing challenges. The trust emphasized the importance of contacting a UTC instead of A&E for conditions that are urgent but not serious enough to warrant emergency care.
The ongoing staffing issues raise concerns about the reliability of urgent care services in the area. As the health trust works to address these challenges, residents are encouraged to utilize available alternatives to ensure they receive the necessary medical attention.
