Mel Schilling Reveals Cancer Has Spread to Her Brain
Mel Schilling, a prominent dating coach and judge on the reality series Married at First Sight, has disclosed that her cancer has metastasized to her brain. The 54-year-old television personality shared the devastating news through social media, stating that doctors have informed her there are no further treatment options available. Schilling first revealed her diagnosis of colon cancer in December 2023, during her active role on the popular reality show.
In her recent update, Schilling explained that the cancer initially diagnosed in her colon has since spread to her lungs and now to the left side of her brain. She described her situation, stating, “Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do.” This announcement comes after a challenging year in which she managed to work while undergoing treatment, including 16 rounds of chemotherapy.
Struggles and Support
Schilling continued her duties on Married at First Sight while balancing her medical treatments. Despite her health challenges, she remained a guiding presence for couples participating in the series, which she joined in 2016. Unfortunately, new symptoms arose around Christmas, including severe headaches and numbness, which ultimately led to the discovery of the cancer’s spread to her brain.
As her health deteriorated, Schilling reflected on the impact of her illness on daily life, admitting that “simple tasks have become incredibly difficult.” She expressed uncertainty about her future, stating, “I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath.” Alongside this update, she shared a photograph with her husband and daughter, highlighting the strong support system she has relied on during this time.
In addition to her health update, Schilling announced her decision to step away from the Australian version of Married at First Sight. This choice was made to prioritize her family and focus on her well-being during treatment. Schilling has been a beloved figure on the show, contributing her expertise and warmth to the participants since her debut.
Acknowledgment from Channel 4
Following her announcement, Channel 4 released a statement recognizing Schilling’s contributions to the program. The network expressed its gratitude, describing her as a valued member of the team known for her “wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness.” They conveyed that her presence on the show has made a significant impact on both viewers and colleagues.
As production continues for the latest UK series, a temporary replacement has been confirmed. John Aiken, an expert from the Australian version of the show, will step in to fill Schilling’s role for the remainder of the current season.
In her message, Schilling also took the opportunity to encourage others to seek medical advice if they feel unwell, urging them to get checked if “something doesn’t feel right.” Her heartfelt update has resonated with many, highlighting the importance of awareness and early detection in health matters.
