NHS Trust Promises Stability for Urgent Treatment Centres by 2026
Two urgent treatment centres in northern England are set to receive a more stable operational framework, according to the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The centres located in Keswick and Penrith have faced intermittent closures due to staffing shortages since July 2025. The trust announced its commitment to the future of these facilities, which serve vital healthcare needs in the region.
The trust acknowledged that both the Keswick and Penrith centres have experienced staffing challenges, leading to temporary closures. In response, staff from both locations have been consolidated at the Penrith site, which offers longer opening hours. This measure ensures that urgent healthcare services remain accessible to local residents and visitors in the area.
In recent communications, the trust indicated that the situation is improving. Staffing gaps, which were previously attributed to a combination of vacancies and long-term absences, are being addressed through successful recruitment efforts. They anticipate that by May 2026, the service will be “much more stable.”
Commitment to Community Health
Dr Gill Findley, the executive chief nurse at the trust, expressed the organization’s dedication to maintaining quality healthcare services for both the local community and the tourist population in the Lake District. She stated, “We know how valuable the service is for the community and the tourist population in the heart of the Lake District, and the Trust is committed to maintaining the service we have at both hospitals.”
Dr Findley also highlighted the centres’ performance, noting that they consistently exceed the national standard of seeing over 95 percent of patients within four hours. The centres have received numerous compliments for their service, underscoring their importance to the community.
However, the trust has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing temporary closures, acknowledging the impact on individuals relying on these services. Dr Findley emphasized that such decisions are made with careful consideration, prioritizing patient safety and the provision of at least one operational urgent treatment facility in the area.
Future Staffing Plans
To stabilize the staffing situation, the trust is actively recruiting new team members. Dr Findley reassured the public that new colleagues are expected to join the team in the upcoming months, which will further strengthen service delivery. While the trust aims to minimize disruptions, some level of service interruption may continue until new staff are fully integrated.
Community members have been encouraged to remain patient and understanding during this transitional phase. The trust is committed to overcoming the challenges it faces and ensuring that residents and visitors can access urgent care services without further interruptions.
In summary, the North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is taking significant steps to enhance the stability of its urgent treatment centres in Keswick and Penrith. With improvements in staffing and a focus on community health, the trust aims to provide reliable healthcare access for all in the region.
